War Horses at Rose Bower

Appomattox, VA   |  www.warhorsesottbs.org

Mission

War Horses at Rose Bower works to rehabilitate and find new careers and loving, safe homes for the older "war horses" of Thoroughbred racing. Though many times passed over by adopters due to their ages, veteran racehorses may need a little more time and a little more creativity in finding them the perfect homes, they have paid their dues many times over, often having many owners and trainers for whom they won races in their long careers on the track. War Horses hopes to provide education in the local history as to the importance of horses during the Civil War, and also to teach potential adopters about the wonderful nature of these beautiful athletes.

Notes from the nonprofit

War Horses at Rose Bower is less than a year old, having accepted its first horses in September of 2013. Founder Barbara Luna has over 30 years of experience in public relations, horse training and non-profit/rescue management through her work at East Coast racetracks during her life. In 2013, she started War Horses after managing a nationally known Thoroughbred retirement program for 5 1/2 years at Parx racetrack. Her incentive for opening War Horses was her realization that older racehorses, while so deserving of adoption and new careers, are often passed over by adopters, in spite of their having provided many owners and trainers with the thrills and enjoyment (and often profit!) of horse racing.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

War Horses at Rose Bower hopes to become an important part of the Appomattox community, and at the same time, help to nationally promote the need for new careers for Thoroughbred racehorses when their lives at the track are over. People who learn to respect animals usually have a healthy respect for people, too!

We will make this happen through staying in touch with the racing industry through social media, creating events for people outside the racing industry in order to raise funds and educate, and by staying close to the local community supporting their community and sharing our horses.
Developing new ways to fundraise outside of the "box" of animal rescue will be the biggest challenge this group faces, but because of War Horses at Rose Bower's location and our tie -in the the local history, we hope to be able to secure our goal of raising $20,000 in 2014.
