MEDSHADOW FOUNDATION, Inc.

Balancing the Risks & Benefits of Medicine

aka MedShadow Foundation   |   New York, NY   |  www.MedShadow.org

Mission

Guided by a passion to educate and empower patients to pro-actively inquire about the short and long term side effects of prescription medicine before accepting them, MedShadow Foundation seeks to help people understand the risks & benefits of medicines and prompt discussions between the patient and health care provider. This includes asking deeper questions to a physician or pharmacist, looking at the pros and cons of prescription drugs, and if appropriate, exploring other options. We empower our readers to learn about prescription drugs and become an engaged advocate in their own health and wellbeing.

Notes from the nonprofit

Initiated by our founder’s personal experience of the devastating side effects of medicine, MedShadow Foundation empowers people to become advocates for their own health and well-being, by asking questions about side effects before accepting prescriptions and taking over-the-counter medicine. MedShadow encourages the discussion and exploration of the pros and cons, risks and benefits of medicine and when appropriate, serious consideration of alternative treatments including lifestyle changes.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Prescription drugs are a part of everyday life for millions of Americans who spent in excess of $329 billion on these medicines in 2013, an increase of 3.2% over the previous year. The pharmaceutical industry spent $3.8 billion in marketing these medications to doctors and consumers. Do they have short or long term side effects? Are there alternative solutions that may be just as effective with lower risk? MedShadow Foundation seeks to prompt discussion between patient and health care provider. This includes asking deeper questions of the physician or pharmacist, looking at the pros and cons of prescription drugs, and if appropriate, exploring other options. We encourage our readers to avoid blind acceptance of prescription drugs and become an engaged advocate in their own health and well-being.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

MedShadow seeks to promote discussion between patient and health care provider. This includes asking deeper questions of the physician or pharmacist, looking at the pros and cons of prescription and OTC drugs, and if appropriate, exploring other options. We encourage patients to conduct a risk/benefit analysis of the medications they are prescribed and thereby become engaged advocates in their own health and well being.

Through our heavily researched articles and blog postings, MedShadow provides a reputable resource to those looking to deepen their knowledge about prescription and OTC drugs and their side effects. In addition, we use social media to promote our articles and features, and have created brochures which have been disseminated a health conferences.

The MedShadow staff is comprised of social media and web professionals, along with editorial and journalism experts with decades of experience, which creates a synergistic team.

MedShadow has grown from a fledgling website with few followers to a portal of information regularly viewed by over 50,000 people monthly in two years. We have increased the number of articles we publish and have partnered with other health organizations and conferences to further reach the consumers of prescription and OTC drugs.
