What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Homeless pregnant women are a very small niche in battling homelessness. Shelters typically will not accept pregnant women. Thus maternity homes have stepped up to aid these women and their unborn children. Many of these women have been rejected by family and friends and have been forced to sleep in cars (if they even have one) or couch surf from house to house. They put their own health and that of their baby's at risk because they do not have access to the prenatal care necessary to deliver a healthy thriving baby. These women often fall below the poverty level and need support in all areas of their lives- food security, housing, education. Bella House seeks to help these homeless pregnant women transform their lives and to give them the training and support to become independent contributing members of society.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Shelter Outreach

The Program Director of The Bella House responds to calls and e-mails from individuals, social agencies, Collin County Homeless Coalition partners, churches, schools, etc., investigating shelter for homeless pregnant women. The Director interviews each applicant by phone, then conducts, as appropriate, a detailed intake process, including a face-to-face meeting and an initial assessment is done of each applicant, and then followed, as appropriate, by a detailed intake process and a criminal background check. A referral list of other housing agencies is provided to the applicant, if necessary.

Population(s) Served
Women and girls
Infants and toddlers

After successfully completing the outreach intake process and being welcomed into the Bella House, an expectant mom enters the Love in Action program. In the mom’s first days of residency, the Program Director and house mother assess a plan suited to her physical, emotional and spiritual needs. The mother is assured of their unconditional love and commitment to her well-being and growth. Working through The Resident Handbook, the mother learns how to be accountable for her current actions and how to set future goals.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Bella House helps homeless pregnant women transform themselves by offering professional case manager support in all areas of their lives. We seek to help them be good parents capable of supporting their families by encouraging them to continue their educations or seek stable better paying employment. We aid them in bringing healthy thriving babies into the world that they have been trained to care for. We provide the shelter, time and support free of any cost to allow them to reassess their lives and to address their needs to improve. We focus on the whole person, providing basic needs like food and shelter, while at the same time helping them develop life skills like parenting, financial management, anger management and mental health stability.

Our ultimate goal is to have a woman "graduate" from Bella House with a healthy child, a good place to live and a job that can sustain their family. We offer the full support of our staff for up to three years after they leave Bella House to help them over obstacles and roadblocks that may develop.

Our strategy is to work individually with homeless pregnant women who seek to turn their lives around. We start by providing basics like shelter and food but then task our professional team of social/ caseworkers to develop individual success plans for each woman. We target their physical, mental and emotional needs to help them move to a place where they and their babies can thrive. We focus on education and better job opportunities.

Transformation is not an instantaneous thing, so we recently added a Transition program run by a full time caseworker to assist our moms for up to three years after they leave Bella House. We offer our full program of services to help keep our moms and babies on the right track to success.

Bella House is well positioned to achieve our goals. We own two single family residences to meet the basic needs of up to 11 moms and babies at any one time. We employ a staff of full and part-time mastered degreed social/caseworkers who work with our moms daily to help them make life altering changes. Our Executive Director and support staff run a lean organization fully focused on the programs supporting our pregnant women.

We have an active Board that keeps us focused on the mission of transforming the lives of homeless pregnant women.

Bella House has offered housing to over 160 women since our opening in 2015. We have welcomed 65 newborns into the world. We have multiple women who have acquired their GED's or have started taking college courses. From a start with no caseworkers, we now have a staff of 9 employees dedicated to helping our clients turn their lives around.

In 2022 we provided our homeless clients with 2700 nights of safe haven.

We have added programming over the years as the needs presented themselves. As a result of seeing many of our moms join us with mental health issues, we established third party mental health counseling at our expense.

Realizing that 3-12 months is insufficient time for our clients to turn their lives around, we added our Transition program to aid these women and their babies for up to three years after they move out of one of the Bella Houses.
