Generations Against Bullying Inc

Movie Night is a special event hosted by Generations Against Bullying (GAB) held at a selected school. At Movie Night, there will be a viewing of a special movie version of combined excerpts from the movie “Bully” by Lee Hirsh and CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 documentary on bullying. This 52-minute powerful video is not only eye-opening to the bullying epidemic but it really puts into perspective the severity of how much our youth are suffering. The movie offers insight into different facets of America’s bullying crisis as it follows five youths and their families over the course of a school year. Glimpses into the home and school settings of these kids creates a powerful and inspiring film that is a must-see for every child, student, teenager, parent, educator, and adult.

Why Have a Movie Night?
Movie Night is an excellent way to have students, parents, the community, and school officials come together to learn more about the bullying epidemic and to learn ways to help put an end to it while having a fun and memorable experience.

What to Expect at Movie Night
Movie Night will be a fun and memorable experience despite the seriousness of the topic of bullying. Each Movie Night event will have a special speaker and/or visitor. Speakers range from popular athletes, YouTube celebrities, pageant winners with anti-bullying platforms, other celebrities, popular local coaches, mentors, motivators, title holders, authors, and other influential
and inspiring personnel.

Movie Night is also offers everyone the chance to meet Buddy Bear, GAB’s Ambassa-dog! Buddy Bear is a dog with a horrific story of bullying but also a story of survival, determination, overcoming hardships, strength, and inspiration. Everyone will get the chance to learn Buddy Bear's story and be inspired to help others just like Buddy Bear helps to battle bullying. At Movie Night, there will be GAB merchandise available for purchase including T-shirts.

How will Movie Night benefit Schools, Students, and Parents?
It is estimated that 13 million children will be bullied in school each year and approximately 160,000 students each day will skip school due to bullying, according to the National Education Association. The rate of suicide committed by our youth due to some form of bullying is on the rise. The amount of bullying that is taking place over the internet (cyber-bullying) and other forms of media such as cell phones, videos, and more, has also been increasing over the years due to accessibility and anonymity. Those who are bullies in schools tend to carry on those bullying behaviors into their adulthood. Unfortunately, bullying is something that children are great at hiding from their parents and other adults. Bullying behavior is often over-looked, underestimated, ignored, or denied to occur. It’s hard to acknowledge bullying behavior in our youth because it’s not something that one is proud of and simultaneously, it is also hard to admit to being bullied because it can be embarrassing. Victims of bullying can do a great job at hiding their pain, fear, and suffering from adults, despite a wide range of signs.

Movie Night will provide parents with the knowledge of what signs of bullying to look for and it will also influence families to spark conversation within their own homes on the topics of bullying and cyber-bullying or to simply become more knowledgeable of what is going on in the lives of your children. Movie Night will encourage a more open line of conversation amongst parents and their children. Parents will gain insight on the severity of this epidemic and how to protect their children. Students will learn ways to become an upstander for their peers instead of being a bystander. Students will also learn ways to get help, communicate their feelings, handle situations, and how to help put an end this crisis. Movie Night will open everyone’s eyes and mind to the bullying epidemic and will hopefully inspire everyone to help make a change.

Schools will benefit from Movie Night because after the knowledge and inspiration that this event will provide, there will be a more comfortable and safe environment for students in schools. Movie Night will help change the culture of learning for not only students but for parents and educators as well. By watching the movie, conversation, awareness, and change will arise on this issue. Movie Night intends on making the lives of our children more desirable, joyful, and positively memorable.

GAB school assemblies are unique because we provide extraordinary speakers with an uplifting message of what it takes to be an
upstander. We illustrate who in history has made the commitment to being an upstander, and how our youth can follow in the
footsteps of legendary upstanders, such as Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, Abraham Lincoln, and others. GAB views the
school assembly as the beginning of our involvement with your school. We will provide resources that will continue to bring
awareness about the epidemic of bullying, and information that will assist victims, bystanders, teachers, and administrators.
GAB has a speaker series ready to provide a lasting message for our youth.
GAB speakers provide the platform to begin a productive dialogue. We will remain in contact, rather than considering the job
complete. We seek to offer resources to build upon the momentum created from the school assembly. GAB school assemblies are
carefully planned to bring awareness to the devastating effects of bullying, encouraging respect towards one’s peers, and providing
the inspiration and roadmap to be an upstander.
GOALS:
 Bring awareness to all students, faculty, and staff about the prevalence of bullying.
 Discuss historical upstanders and anecdotal stories of upstanders.
 Inspire and provide students the roadmap to become upstanders.
GAB believes all kids have the ability to make a difference in the world, and we seek to inspire them by teaching the key ingredients
and commonalities of the great upstanders in history. The underlying message of being an upstander requires love and the courage
to act.
GAB FOLLOW-UP PLAN:
GAB views the school assembly as the essential first step toward addressing the bullying epidemic.
Students often have many questions that go unanswered. The school assembly will encourage students to seek out answers to
their questions:
 Who can I trust and tell that I am being mistreated?
 How do I get someone to stop bullying me?
 How do I respond to social media attacks?
 How can I become an upstander?
GAB’s speakers can provide a positive message about bullying, to help open the door for teachers to start a dialog with students:
 Strategies for preventing bullying by encouraging a culture of respect for the differences among students.
 How building a positive support network among students and other adults can help prevent bullying.
 Positive engagement of teachers, staff, and faculty, can create an atmosphere for constructive communication.
Resources
GAB provides resources based on the most effective research to date. We provide resources for both teachers, administration, and
students to serve as a basis for further conversations after the assembly. Our resources and messages are tailored to the intended
audience, whether it is elementary, middle or high school students. We provide hands-on materials that include ongoing efforts to

combat bullying. The follow-up packet includes the importance for peer to peer interaction, character building, role playing, anti-
bullying contracts, and activities concerning cyberbullying intervention and response.

We have a booth or table set up at events that we're invited to in order to raise awareness about our program via conversation and sharing materials. We sometimes sell GAB Gear and accept donations at the same time.

We work with employees to teach them how to deal with bullying issues, especially as an Upstander who can intercede on behalf of the victim in an appropriate, sensitive, and non-threatening way.

We teach the elderly and those who work with them how to appropriately intercede in the event that bullying occurs, using sensitive and non-threatening techniques.

We offer male and female scouts of all ages the opportunity to earn the Upstander patch based on age-appropriate educational requirements about bullying prevention.
