Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Farmed Animal Rescue
We rescue, rehabilitate, and offers a life-long home to abused and neglected farmed animals. Uplands PEAK provides daily care and seeks veterinarian care when necessary.
Internship
Uplands PEAK's internship program offers hands-on experience with farmed animal care as well as all aspects of non-profit management. Additionally, we offer on-site housing for a complete immersion educational experience.
Volunteer
In addition to taking the best care of our rescued residents there are countless other responsibilities involved in managing a successful non-profit: social media management, volunteer management, accounting, community outreach, event coordination, fundraising, and reporting (just to name a few).
Visiting
Currently there are over 30 guided sanctuary tours scheduled for 2017.
Membership
Provides vital funding for the individual care of PEAK residents and helps sustain outreach and humane education programs.
Sponsorship
Monthly sponsorship allows donors to play a role in the life of a rescued farmed animal and support PEAK’s work. As a “PEAK PAL”, sponsors help cover daily care costs like feed, bedding, on-going medications, and preventative veterinary care (yearly shots, fecal exams, etc.) for one of the residents.
Outreach & Education
Both on & off-site events promoting the sanctuary and it's mission of "People, Animals, and Earth in Kinship".

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Uplands PEAK Sanctuary aims to rescue and rehabilitate abused and neglected farmed animals, educate the public to the benefits of a healthy vegan lifestyle, and promote environmental sustainability.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Through visiting hours, events, & educational tours, patrons are able to experience the sanctuary in person, learn about the background of the residents and the cruelty they've escaped, and spend time hands-on with the animals living in freedom there. Once people can experience the animals living in peace, they develop a bond with them, and often leave with a changed heart and mind. Uplands PEAK strives to show compassion to all visitors, guests and animal residents regardless of situation or background, with a hope this will foster connection and acceptance to a vegan lifestyle. Uplands PEAK recognizes and promotes the environmental impact of animal agriculture and seeks to educate the public on not only the animal cruelty but also the environmental impact of such operations. In addition to educating the public about how living vegan saves animals and the earth, PEAK also makes a commitment to practice diligent stewardship of the land in which the sanctuary resides, uses eco-friendly products, and builds with sustainable energy and supplies whenever possible.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Uplands PEAK Sanctuary is currently run full-time by the founders, Mark & Michelle Pruitt, along with one full-time Animal Care Giver, a small core of volunteers, interns, and one part-time staff member. Through social media exposure, donation campaigns, events, and word-of-mouth PEAK has been gradually growing and getting more and more attention and support. In 2018, the sanctuary moved from a 20-acre property in Salem, IN to a 105-acre property in Freedom, IN in an effort to expand it's rescue and educational capacity and increase it's volunteer and visitor base.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Most notably, Uplands PEAK to date has rescued and rehabilitated five cows, eleven pigs, fourteen chickens, two turkeys, and six goats. The animals get proper veterinary care and nutrition. They live in freedom on over 100 acres with spacious housing, as well abundant enrichment opportunities. They do not have jobs, they just live their lives in peace and get to take advantage of their natural instincts.
Additionally, Uplands PEAK has attended numerous festivals and off-site events promoting the sanctuary and mission. They have hosted successful on-site events and bus trips to the sanctuary. In 2014, they launched an internship program and opened a Bed & Breakfast room for visitors to stay overnight and experience the company of the animals in a more personalized way. To date they have had over 1000 visitors at the sanctuary with the interest growing everyday thanks to outreach teams in neighboring large cities, social media exposure, and recommendation by previous visitors.
The current goals include finding more volunteers and full-time staff to help us carry out the long-term goals of the sanctuary and sustain it's programming and outreach.

- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
