Mission

Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement™ is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization with a mission to ensure that every child has access to Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) in their classrooms and to help facilitate this teaching within their families, schools and communities. We do this in honor of Jesse and to spread the message he left on his family’s kitchen chalkboard shortly before he died – “Nurturing, Healing Love.” Founder, Scarlett Lewis has personally dedicated her life’s work to sharing Jesse’s message to make a positive impact on our world and by supporting the efforts of increasing the awareness and benefits of SEL by “Choosing Love.”

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The world has never needed love and compassion more than we do now. Our objective is to ensure that every child has the opportunity to benefit from an SEL curriculum. Our goal is to help make sure that all of our children are fully equipped and empowered to choose love. We aim to provide every young person with the tools necessary to change angry thoughts into caring thoughts. Ultimately, we believe this is the answer to ensuring that what happened at Newtown does not happen again.

The Foundation will be a central place for educators and individuals to access videos, individual courses and programs, proprietary and other compiled from existing programs. Our web-based method of dissemination will be offered for free, is easily accessible, and readily available for every classroom and home. Children and adults will be able to learn from tools that promote a peaceful, loving and happy way of life and then follow through with civic action oriented activities and programs that encourage them to use the concepts they've learned in real life situations and gain confidence in outcomes that positively impact others.

Over the course of two years, the Foundation worked with educators and youth development experts from across the country to develop our programmatic materials.

Additionally, the JLCLF has established ongoing partnerships and collaborations with some of the most effective proponents of SEL in the US with decades of research and experience, including:
Collaborative for Academic Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL)
Charter for Compassion
Committee for Children
HeartMath
MindUp, The Hawn Foundation
Mission Be, a 9/11 Initiative
Yale's Ruler Program

We are proud to receive support from the Novo Foundation Fund of Tides Foundation.

We've developed a comprehensive SEL-based program, the Choose Love Enrichment Program. The Foundation has partnered and aligned with educators, funders, partners, schools, community groups, and other organizations to launch the program in 2016.

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
  • We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
  • We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
Policies and processes
  • We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
