Mission

The Chesapeake Amateur Radio Service (CARS) provides volunteer services to the City of Chesapeake’s Emergency Operations Center and their emergency shelters. We conduct community hands-on training and classes in the principles and operation of wireless communications and FCC licensing. Additionally, we operate several Amateur Radio repeaters that provide regular and emergency communications for Southeastern Virginia and parts of North Carolina.

Amateur Radio Repeaters

CARS operates several Amateur Radio repeaters which provide regular and emergency communications coverage to Southeastern Virginia and nearby parts of North Carolina.

Population(s) Served

CARS provides Amateur Radio training classes to help individuals obtain amateur radio licenses from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). These classes are open to the public regardless of age, gender, or ethnic background. We also provide volunteer examiners to administer testing for federal licensing of Amateur Radio operators.

We provide volunteer radio operators to augment or replace critical communication infrastructure and provided technical expertise in support of the City during natural or man-made disasters.
