What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

American Polish Lowland Sheepdog International Health Survey

The purpose of this program is to gather worldwide data on the health status in the breed, so as to better understand the extent to which health issues exist and adjust breeding program philosophy, goals, and protocols to preserve the integrity and longevity of the breed. Genetics play an even more vital role in a rare breed such as ours. This survey hopes to learn where the detrimental genetics could be identified and avoided.

Population(s) Served

This is an optional program for Polish Lowland Sheepdog owners anywhere in the world. Participants submit a DNA sample to UC Davis for genetic analysis. Owners are provided a copy of the DNA markers and general information for their dog(s). The lab needs approximately 200 samples to provide APLSA with a comprehensive report on genetic diversity and overall health of the breed, identifying any weaknesses, and providing a picture of longevity or lack of it. There are three stages to this study; the cost to owners is $50 for Part 1, $100 for Part 2, and $100 for Part 3. There is no cost to APLSA, however, the information will be invaluable.
