What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Dog meat eating is a heinous practice rejected by most of the developing world. Yet, it still exists in many parts of the world and manages to stay under the radar. Duo Duo uses education and advocacy to build grassroots movements in the very communities that these dog meat eating practices thrive. We work toward a sustainable end to the horrific practice and trade of dog meat eating. We empower those communities to end the heinous practice and create sustainable alternative environmentally sound trade.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Spay and Neuter Veterinary Training

In China, dogs are highly susceptible to being captured, sold and then killed in slaughterhouses that supply the dog meat trade. Our project brings US-based veterinary experts to DaLian, China to train local veterinarian workers on spay and neutering techniques that are quicker, minimally invasive, and have a shorter recovery time. These skills will help local vets to provide faster and less painful spay and neutering services. Hundreds of dogs will be spay/neutered locally by the vets trained through this project and as more vets learn the procedure, the impact to disrupt supply is unlimited.

Adults

Yulin friends have told us that they believe once a dog has a name, it has been humanized; is less likely to be killed for meat; and a bond is more likely to form between the animal and people. So, Duo Duo fills our van with name tag machine, tags, collars, and other dog supplies and set off to give dogs in rural areas and farms names and tagged collars. While we have their attention, we provide education and show people that dogs are truly man's best friend.

Population(s) Served
Adults

we believe that the animal-loving, younger generation is the answer to ending the dog meat trade. We helped open the first dog-friendly cafe in Yulin. The many dog lovers of Yulin now have a beautiful space where they can meet up, play with dogs, and hold events. This cafe is a powerful visual in the community, showing everyone that not all Yuliners approve of the dog eating practice but instead cherish their pets. The cafe also allows kids to build their comfort level and bond with dogs. In turn, they will go home and help change the minds of their family.

Duo Duo Project is proud to sponsor the Annual Animal Protection Conference for college students every year in China. This event for college-aged animal lovers also included a visit to a local shelter and learn about its operations. Through this project, wee hope to foster the next generation's love and respect for animals.

In MuDanJian, China, we sponsor a well-run shelter that cares for about 80 dogs. MuDanJian is the only city in China that has a legal dog slaughter house.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

We aim to sponsor and host more community education and outreach projects. Our goal is to change people's hearts and minds about eating and abusing dogs and cats.

Duo Duo uses education and advocacy to build grassroots movements in the very communities where the dog meat eating practices thrive. We work toward a sustainable end to the horrific practice and trade of dog meat eating. We empower those communities to end the heinous practice and create sustainable alternative environmentally sound trade. Some of our activities include hosting engaging community events designed to bring kids with dogs/cat together in meaningful play; events and media projects to show the values of dogs; and job creation for local women to make dog/cat related products for sale. These are just an example of the work we do to educate and change the hearts and minds of people in China about the treatment of dogs and cats.

Since 2014, we have established a strong grass root team in China. We work closely with young and compassionate local volunteers to help us put on our events and trainings. Because we are based in the Bay Area, we have been able to utilize the large and supportive Chinese American community and the aspiration of the Silicon Valley from Asia to achieve valuable support.

In 2018 we have sponsored 2 annual animal welfare summer camps in China, two spay and neuter hands on trainings, adoption days, pet parades and several high level meetings with Chinese officials to discuss the necessity for a modern society to have an animal welfare law. Countless medical and food support for many local shelters who took in dogs rescued from dog meat trade.
