Clothing Children with Dignity and Love
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Research demonstrates that children who have their basic needs met do better in school. There are many programs that address housing and food insecurity. But what if you do not have clean clothes to wear to school? Until now, students have lacked a program designed to invest in their social and educational development by providing sufficient well-fitting school clothes to improve confidence and performance. Currently, Note in the Pocket is the only organization in Wake County, NC that provides FREE quality clothing to students and multi-general family members. Our unique model for getting the clothes to the children strives to remove some of the stigma that goes along with needing help. We have seen the positive results that can come from a package of donated clothing, a sense of pride, dignity, and new found confidence and a desire for a better future through a good education.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Note in the Pocket strives to provide clothing to children and their families in Wake County who need them. We partner with schools and social service agencies to identify the need. We receive and process donated clothing. We then hand select and deliver a week's worth of requested coordinated clothing for each individual referred to us. We call this clothing children with dignity and love.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
By having dedicated temporary staffing personnel, our objective is to identify the duties of the future staffing positions needed to support the current administration. Through their help with volunteer recruitment, training, assistance with policy manuals, strategic planning, grant writing, fundraising coordination and administrative tasks, they will allow the Executive Director to focus on areas that provide financial support through community awareness, donor recruitment and retention and fundraising campaigns. Having the time necessary to focus on increasing other avenues of financial support will allow us to grow the funding needed to provide for the second full-time staff member as well as raise funds for an additional part-time administrative staff person within the year to replace the grant funds when they run out.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
By providing much needed clothing to students in Wake County, we allow them to arrive at school without the stigma of clothes that reek of poverty. By providing multiple outfits that can be worn with dignity, we allow these students the opportunity to arrive at school ready to learn. We believe that it is unacceptable that children are limited in their educational and social development due to a lack of decent, well fitting, seasonal- and school-appropriate clothes.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
What began with coats for a class of impoverished kindergartners has grown into a county-wide agency providing school-appropriate wardrobes to under-served students in need. Since 2013, Note in the Pocket has clothed over 28,875 children and family members.
During 2020 we clothed 5,246 individuals, including over 1,300 individuals reached through our Emergency Clothing Effort. We understand the need for clothing will continue to grow and we have set an ambitious goal to clothe 6,000 in 2021.
