Mission

Our mission is to provide all children, from all backgrounds, with opportunities to imagine, create, and collaborate – so they can shape the world of tomorrow.

Notes from the nonprofit

Scratch has become the world’s largest coding community for kids. In 2022, Scratch reached more than 100 million registered users. Scratch launched in May of 2007 as a downloadable desktop application. Kids could create their own interactive stories, games, and animations on their computer and share them with the online community by uploading them to the Scratch website. The release of Scratch 2.0 brought Scratch to the web in 2013, resulting in exponential growth in the Scratch community. Scratch is now the world’s largest coding platform for kids; it’s available worldwide, for free. We needed a way to support the continued growth of Scratch and to help the project continue to scale, so the Scratch Foundation was established in 2013 as an independent 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization. Mitchel Resnick, Professor of Learning Research at the MIT Media Lab, and David Siegel, Co-Founder and Co-Chairman of the investment management firm Two Sigma, are the original founders.
