What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Voice For The Needy is dedicated to combating the national stray animals crisis in Romania of overpopulation, abandonment, starvation, and euthanasia through funding and extensive educational programs. Unfortunately Romanian authorities promote the savage catching and cruel killing of stray animals, and reward the people who do so. The few laws against animal cruelty are not enforced, and the animals are left to fend for themselves. Also, the culture sees animal abuse as something normal. Voice For The Needy also aims is to help and partner with a variety of US-based nonprofits.

Sami and friends

Sami and Friends is an animal rescue and placement project set up by Oana Gusatu in 2018.

Oana is Voice For The Needy;s Director of Strategy and has joined our board of directors in 2018.

Sami and her friends are (for most part) Romanian stray dogs adopted in the US. It all started with Sami, who showed up outside Oana's house in Eastern Romania, one cold and wet November morning. Her mom took her in, although she was already housing other 2 stray dogs and 5 stray cats.

Sami spent 5 happy months there, making friends with the other animals, enjoying good food and long walks on the fields. But when the house was sold in 2018, Oana decided that there’s no way Sami would go back on the streets. The only solution was to bring her to the US.

3 months later she was arriving at SeaTac airport in Seattle, ready to start her new life in the US. Her first new friends (Blanka and Oliver) soon found their way out of Romania and into loving homes in the US and the UK. Then followed Clara and Mia.

Many other friends are waiting back in Romania, longing for a loving family and a forever home. To be able to help more of them, Oana and Dana (Founder of Voice For The Needy) joined forces and, in February 2020, Sami and Friends became a Voice For The Needy project.

Voice For The Needy encourages Romanian citizens to volunteer to rescue community animals. The purpose of the volunteer program is to encourage empathy, compassion and responsibility toward animals with the long term goal to change mentality across the entire country.

We work with the volunteer rescuers and help them fundraise to cover the vet bills, transportation, and whatever is needed for that rescue to be successful. The program is open to registered Romanian associations as well.

To enter the volunteer program, the interested parties need to fill out an application and then be verified. All spendings will be reimbursed upon submitting receipts.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Voice For The Needy aims to change the life of stray animals for the better and educate people to become more loving toward the helpless animals. Too often the world is cruel for those left to fend for themselves such as homeless cats and dogs, abused horses, laboratory animals, and the list goes on endlessly. Voice For The Needy hopes to change that one stray animal at a time.

Voice For The Needy's primary and long term goals goal is to open a no-kill shelter in Romania where we can take care of as many homeless dogs and cats as possible. The goal is to neuter, vaccinate, bring them to good health, and then find a kind and forever home for all of them.

Voice For The Needy's secondary goal is to help US-based nonprofits cover the costs of medical care for gravely injured abandoned animals.

We have over 400 beneficiaries: Associations, independent rescuers and pet owners economically affected by the pandemic. We empower them all by offering a platform to organize fundraisers and the tool they need to succeed.

More often than not rescuers have a hard time raising the funds they need to take care of the rescued animals and they don't know how to promote their work. This is where we come in to help. So far we worked preponderantly with rescuers from Romania, Egypt, and Turkey. However, we are open to helping rescuers from other locations as well.

Our work is most stringent and we urge people to get involved and donate time, money, services, etc.
