What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Inclusion Connections addresses the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities while they are in school and as they transition from school to the workplace and independent living. We offer solutions in the form of skills training and job placement, ongoing support for jobholders, as well as access to fitness, arts and social opportunities. We work to open doors which advance the independence of those we serve.

Community Connections

Community Connections is the "umbrella" term for programs which encompass an impressive year-round selection of classes, activities and events for individuals ages 8-40 with developmental disabilities. We engage 300+ teen, adult and corporate volunteers every year who help us reach our mission, and partner when it makes sense. Programs address the special needs of individuals with: Healthy Living (cooking classes, individual and team fitness, social opportunities and life skills), CreateAbility (art, theater, dance and music), EmployAbility (PawsAbilities skills training, employment readiness classes, and job placement, with trainees making dog treats, bandanas, toys and other pet-related products, then selling them in our retail and PawsAbilities Mobile Stores (online at PawsKC.org). We also hold Spring Break and Summer Camps.

Population(s) Served
People with disabilities

EmployAbility Program is designed to provide the skills training young adults with intellectual disabilities need to obtain community-based employment. Known in the community as “PawsAbilities”, students make dog treats, bandanas and other products, pack and ship orders, wait on customers in our retail and mobile stores, and attend job readiness classes. (Note: The program was founded in alignment with our students' love for dogs!! We love dogs and our store is DOG-FRIENDLY!). Our Employment Specialist engages businesses to hire our students, matching individuals’ abilities and preferences with paid positions. We provide ongoing support to jobholders including job coaching and transportation to/from workplaces (the secret sauce!). Our success rate is very high, with a 90%+ job retention rate. We are known in the Kansas City area as an outstanding place for individuals with developmental disabilities to learn, grow, become employed, and to prepare for independent living.

Population(s) Served
People with disabilities

Healthy Living program provides opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities to become and stay healthier. We provide cooking classes, fitness opportunities, a competitive speed stacking team, and social opportunities such as dances and trips to Royals games and Starlight Theater performances. We believe that healthy bodies are essential to fulfilled lives, and that good health is necessary for employment to be successful. Our inclusive social opportunities are fundamental to the happiness and well-being of those we serve. One of our focuses going forward is to create a program addressing the needs of individuals as they transition from school to the workplace and greater independence.

Population(s) Served
People with disabilities

CreateAbility offers year-round access to the arts for young people with developmental disabilities. Students explore individual creativity through various art forms including painting, mosaics, drawing, dancing, music, and our popular theater program. It is our intention to create an art studio as we expand our space in 2022. Through CreateAbility, communication skills improve, required teamwork improves social skills, and performing in front of live audiences is a wonderful way to receive affirmation and feel included. Visits to Starlight Theatre performances are the highlight of the summer for many individuals. The more well-rounded and engaged individuals with disabilities are, the better off our entire community will become.

Population(s) Served
People with disabilities

Programming at Inclusion Connections is year-round, offering access to classes and activities to individuals ages 8-40 who have developmental disabilities. We believe such access addresses a fundamental need to access one's community. Summer is a particularly difficult time, leaving school-age individuals (typically through age 21 for those with developmental disabilities) isolated and their families overwhelmed with 24/7 care. Inclusion Connections' summer program provides recreational and social activities, job-readiness and self-advocacy classes, plus educational opportunities, including health and wellness, fitness, meal and snack prep, and art exploration. In addition, teens who volunteer during the summer hone leadership skills and become more caring community members. Blending kids with and without disabilities helps showcase students' unique abilities and helps us reach the shared community goal of full inclusion. Spring break camps are typically held as well.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The primary goal of Inclusion Connections is to advance the independence of young people with developmental disabilities. This year our primary focus is two-fold: improving PawsAbilities employment program, and planning and fundraising for BelongKC supportive living initiative.

The strategy employed to enable Inclusion Connections to accomplish organizational goals is to offer year-round programming: Healthy Living, CreateAbility, EmployAbility (PawsAbilities) and Camps. Everything we do at IC is designed to accommodate abilities and promote independence of students. They and their families want more than what has been available in the past. Since 2013 programming has grown and expanded to meet the evolving needs of those we serve. Each year our revenues have increased, allowing us to serve more individuals and to provide a wider canopy of opportunities for them. One of the means we have employed to achieve success is to thoughtfully and strategically form community partnerships including other nonprofits as well as businesses. We are proud that many of these business partners have become multi-faceted: sponsoring Gala FashionAbility, providing volunteers, and employing our students. This strategy has allowed us to maximize impact.

Inclusion Connections continues to evolve, becoming a well-known and respected organization that gets things done! Our families and students are confident in our ability to provide the pathway to independence they want and need. The nonprofit is strong and vibrant, with a varied stream of revenues and wide community support. Our small size can be deceiving: we are capable of accomplishing a lot! We continue to add staff, refine partnerships, and are expanding our Learning Center space in Olathe once again in Spring 2022. PawsAbilities employment program continues to expand numbers served and sales of our products just doubled year-over-year. The needs of our students is a great motivator, and with greater funding we will continue to provide the opportunities they so richly deserve. Our BelongKC supportive living initiative is critically-needed in our Kansas City community, and remains an organizational focus.

PawsAbilities job skills training and placement program was implemented in 2016 to meet the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities as they transition from school to the workplace. Students learn translatable skills by making dog treats and other products, packing and shipping orders, waiting on customers in our retail and mobile stores, all in preparation for community-based employment. Our employment specialist cultivates businesses with positions matching students' interests and abilities, and we provide ongoing support for jobholders including job coaching, additional education and all-important transportation to/from workplaces (none are able to drive).

We also offer a wide-variety of evening program opportunities including cooking classes, individual and team fitness, art, music, dance and theater, and provide numerous social opportunities. In 2019 we implemented Inclusion for Life workshops for our families and other community members, addressing barriers, providing education and identifying resources across the life-span. This is just one example of how Inclusion Connections advocates for individuals with disabilities in our community.

In 2021 we began planning BelongKC, a supportive living initiative meeting a critical need in our community. We are currently working with experts and implementing a fundraising strategy to achieve this goal.
