RIO RANCHO CREATIVE CROSSROADS

Where community and the arts meet

aka Rio Rancho Youth Chorus/Rio Rancho Players/Squeaky Shoe Project   |   Rio Rancho, NM   |  www.rr-cc.org

Mission

To develop, promote and support arts programming in Rio Rancho and the surrounding area which provides barrier-free access for community engagement and economic opportunity for local artists. Vision Statement: We envision a community in which everyone has access to the knowledge, inspiration, comfort, enrichment and cultural complexity of the arts. We will be a leading force for nurturing art in all its forms for the people, organizations and businesses in our area.

Notes from the nonprofit

2021-2022 - The year of Covid-19 continues. Performing Arts organizations were the 1st to close and will be the last to re-open. We had to start from scratch and pivot as much programming as we could to virtual. Throughout 2021, we had to start and stop due to Covid restrictions, Covid in the cast or membership, etc. The performers, their families, the audiences, all took it in stride and kept coming back no matter how many times we had to reschedule a show or change rehearsals or move to another location. It just cements our belief that Rio Rancho wants the arts very much and as long as we can, RRCC will provide multi-discipline low/no cost arts programming to all ages.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Rio Rancho is a community with very limited arts engagement offerings for its residents. Rio Rancho Creative Crossroads (RRCC) firmly believes in the ability of the arts to inspire, refresh and to bridge economic and cultural differences in our society. We have developed a variety of programs to enhance life in Rio Rancho which are easily accessible and affordable for all ages. RRCC brings art education and opportunities for engagement to Rio Rancho and actually uses art to provide goods and bring awareness to needs within our community. In addition to RRCC’s Squeaky Shoe Project, drives for area non-profits are held in conjunction with our choral concerts i.e.: Haven House Domestic Abuse Shelter, Watermelon Ranch Animal Shelter, St. Felix Food Pantry.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Rio Rancho Youth Chorus

Rio Rancho Youth Chorus (RRYC)
Our flagship program for ages 12 – 18, RRYC provides high quality choral music education experiences not found elsewhere in our community. Our members include home schooled, Charter students with no arts component & any youth who cannot access regular school arts activities. Since no auditions are required, any young person can participate in a repertoire that spans various cultures, languages, styles, eras and levels of complexity which challenges, educates and enlightens both our members and our audiences. RRYC is committed to introducing the next generation to the merits of collaborative music, to nurturing a love and respect for an interactive musical experience, and to providing a fun, safe environment where youth can take part in the joy of creating and sharing music with others. Collaborations with local musicians and other performing groups occur each season further enhancing the experience and inspiring our budding artists.

Population(s) Served
Adolescents
Economically disadvantaged people
At-risk youth
LGBTQ people
Ethnic and racial groups

This program helps local artisans find ways to use their talents to gift the community. In our first collaboration, The Squeaky Shoe Project, we teamed up with a local children’s book author to create a coloring book version of her work “Stanley and the Squeaky Shoes”. Each coloring book sells for $5 and the author uses the proceeds to buy and deliver shoes to kids in need. As of fall 2019, the Squeaky Shoe Project has provided 300 pairs of shoes to local children. A sequel entitled “Sarah and the Satin Slippers” is published and also available on Amazon.

Population(s) Served
Adults
Children and youth
Ethnic and racial groups
LGBTQ people
Economically disadvantaged people

In order to introduce youth to different areas/fields of art, RRCC teams up with local artists to create one-day workshops. Our first was a film-maker’s workshop featuring a local director/producer. During this 4-hour session kids 12 – 18 learned how to create a story and then shoot, edit and produce a short movie using only their cell phone.

Population(s) Served
Artists and performers
Adults
Children and youth
Ethnic and racial groups
LGBTQ people

Rio Rancho’s first, all-ages community theater group, RRP stays true to the overall mission of RRCC in breaking down barriers to community participation. All are welcome, no one is turned away. We double/triple cast roles to ensure inclusion, and anyone who expresses interest gets a role in the show or a position in the production crew. Casting was complete and rehearsals had begun for our first production scheduled for May, 2020 when the COVID shutdown occurred. We are exploring various possibilities for creating an alternative to the traditional performance model.

Population(s) Served
Adults
Ethnic and racial groups
LGBTQ people
Artists and performers

Due to the popularity of our Youth Chorus, we launched a children's chorus August 2022. Following the same model, this is a cooperative chorus (not competitive) so any singer 2nd-5th grade can join. We welcome all singers no matter ability, gender, identity, experiences, background, etc. We keep the fees low ($100 for 13 weeks of rehearsal and 2 performances) and offer payment plans and scholarships.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Recognizing that art in its many forms plays an important role in society, Rio Rancho Creative Crossroads’ goal is to introduce the whole community to a broad range of multi-cultural, varied and innovative styles of art. RRCC also strives to provide exposure to artists and performers as well as to create spaces where these important members of our community can earn a living at their craft. In exchange, we encourage the artisans to give back to the community by mentoring others to ensure the continuation of cultural enrichment in Rio Rancho.

Rio Rancho Creative Crossroads has grown steadily since its inception in 2013, beginning with a chorus of 9 members and numbering 35+ by 2019. We identified the need for a robust community theater in Rio Rancho and were successful in recruiting participants of all ages. To solidify our presence in the community, we will continue to team up with local libraries, hospitals, businesses, and other non-profits to share a wide variety of artistic programming within our community. We will pursue partnerships with other area non-profits to build recognition throughout the community. Reaching out to local charter schools and youth organizations to explore new opportunities will create innovative programs to increase accessibility to the arts throughout Rio Rancho.

Our Board of Directors is dedicated to the success of RRCC and is very involved, continuously seeking funding opportunities and consistently reaching fundraising goals. We are garnering great support from our local government, businesses, area artists and volunteers and have been successful with many of our grant applications. We are highly motivated to accomplish our goals and well positioned to collaborate with all types of organizations and initiate partnerships throughout our community. We pride ourselves on being flexible and nimble which has proved to be an asset in the current pandemic situation, allowing us to embark on virtual rehearsals and performances of the chorus with a minimum of downtime.

Rio Rancho Creative Crossroads’ initial project, Rio Rancho Youth Chorus, has grown from 9 members to over 35. We are recognized as a leading artistic organization for youth (ages 12 – 18) and as an interactive contributor to the cultural life of our community. In collaboration with the Washington, D.C. Folger Shakespeare Library’s National First Folio Traveling Exhibit on display at the New Mexico Museum Art, RRYC presented “Songs from the First Folio”. We also joined the New Mexico Gay Men’s Chorus, the Zia Singers of Santa Fe and area orchestral musicians to perform Christopher Tin’s original oratorio “The Drop That Contained the Sea”. (Tin’s new work “Shiver the Sky” will hopefully be presented in 2021). RRYC regularly appears at local sporting events and civic functions to sing the National Anthem, and performs mini-concerts for other local non-profits and senior centers. In line with our commitment to raising awareness of needs within our community, we have conducted drives in conjunction with our concerts resulting in pajamas for kids & moms at Haven House; pet supplies for Watermelon Ranch; holiday toys for St. Felix Pantry and sold the “Stanley and the Squeaky Shoes” coloring books to raise funds for children’s shoes. To give our aspiring artists opportunities for live performance experiences, RRCC has been in discussions with local restaurants and other facilities to create regular “open mic nights”. Recently, Rio Rancho Players has secured a dedicated rehearsal/performance space, and future plans include the creation of an “art belt” within our community – a space large enough for artisans to produce and share their skills. While in-person events and activities are suspended at this time for health reasons, RRCC continues to move forward in planning and organizing for a more normal tomorrow including a summer STEAM (STEM+Art) program in collaboration with a local robotics group to “build your own robot”. At the same time we are honing our skills in the virtual world to maintain our programs for today.

Data
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
Policies and processes
  • We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
