What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Losing a child is a life-changing event. No matter the situation or length of gestation, a pregnancy loss can be difficult to recover from physically, emotionally, and mentally. It often leads to feelings of isolation, despair, or shame. Approximately 1 million babies die in utero or shortly after birth each year in the United States yet the resources for parents and medical professionals are extremely limited. Many of those experiencing a pregnancy loss are sent home with this devastating information but no resources on what to expect. Although approximately one in four pregnancies end in a loss, the misconception is that it is rare. There is often a stigma attached to pregnancy loss, or an assumption that it was caused by something the mother did, and is something that one should be ashamed about. The reality is, everyone knows someone who has suffered a loss whether they are aware of it or not.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Comfort Kits

Through the Heart provides Comfort Kits free of charge to individuals or couples who have recently suffered a pregnancy loss. Each kit comes full of items to pamper you including personal care items, sweet and savory snacks, and a Redbox movie rental code. Information about our organization and a handwritten note from our co-founder are also included to add a personal touch. While nothing can take away the pain of a loss, it is our hope that this kit will provide some distraction during a difficult time and provide resources to begin healing.

Since the program began in November 2013, we have mailed more than 2,700 kits to all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The mission of Through the Heart is to educate and support anyone who is experiencing a pregnancy loss either directly or indirectly. When an individual or couple suffers a loss, they are not the only ones affected. Many times loved ones want to provide help and comfort but simply do not know how. Therefore, the organization strives to make the journey easier for all involved by providing that information and assistance in navigating through a difficult time. The organization provides support and education for these populations without limitations. It embraces all types of loss, including miscarriage, stillbirth, ectopic pregnancy, blighted ovum, chemical pregnancy, and pregnancies terminated for medical reasons. We want pregnancy loss to become a topic that is more openly discussed, acknowledged, and understood.

Through the Heart’s current activity focuses heavily on its Comfort Kit program. Kits are provided free of charge to individuals or couples who have recently suffered a pregnancy loss and are delivered via USPS Priority Mail and through partnerships with hospitals and doctors. Each kit comes full of pampering and distracting items including personal care items such as hand lotion and candles, sweet and savory snacks, a Redbox movie code, information about the organization and a handwritten note to ensure each recipient understands they are not alone. The program began in November 2013 and to date, more than 1,900 kits have been distributed to all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Through the Heart also works to provide education through the distribution of quick reference postcards that provide tips for coping with pregnancy loss. Over the last several years, more than 3,000 postcards have been distributed to partners in the medical community.

Increasing the distribution of Comfort Kits is a key priority for Through the Heart. We are currently utilizing a partnership with Google AdWords to create visibility for the program along with our grassroots marketing efforts.

Continuing to create partnerships with local and national doctors, hospitals, and organizations and distributing educational materials is also a priority in upcoming years. To accomplish this, we have expanded our outreach capabilities by creating an Education Outreach Coordinator position, a volunteer role that focuses on sending our materials nationwide.

Since the Comfort Kit program began in Nov. 2013, we have distributed more than 1,900 kits nationwide. We want EVERY grieving parent to know about this program and our other resources, and we will strive to accomplish this by breaking the silence surrounding pregnancy loss and speaking out at every opportunity.

As a small and young organization, our goal for what's next is always to just keep growing - to keep letting people know we are here and they are not alone!
