What we aim to solve
NeedyMeds was started in 1997 by Richard J. Sagall, MD, a family physician, and Libby Overly, MSW, MEd, a medical social worker. Both realized there was a need for a centralized resource for information on pharmaceutical patient assistance programs. With the Internet becoming an important source of information, they decided that was the perfect medium for this ever-changing information. Since then NeedyMeds has grown considerably. The website has become the premier source of information on all types of programs that assists those who can't afford their medications or health care costs.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
NeedyMeds educates and empowers those seeking cost-effective, comprehensive healthcare and strives towards affordable healthcare for all. Our target population is primarily underserved individuals and communities, but we offer extensive healthcare cost solutions and educational trainings that transcend socioeconomic class. By offering program assistance as well as educational opportunities, NeedyMeds is uniquely poised to simultaneously help people in need while providing them with the tools to make more informed choices about their wellness. Self-advocacy and knowledge will lead to the intended social outcome: the demand for reasonably priced, robust healthcare coverage. Our business-oriented goals include expanding our support base and broadening our educational goals to empower more communities and direct social change. Our service-oriented goals include improving our website searchability, adding additional cost-savings programs and multiplying the avenue of access to assistance we offer. We will define long term success by having increased the level of monetary support we receive, the number of individuals we helped, the number of communities we served and the amount of money we saved our consumers. Our success can be measured through data metrics including number of website visitors, number of call center phone calls, number of healthcare programs we connected people with, the dollar savings through our drug discount card, the number of times our drug discount card was accepted and by tracking the extend to which our educational tools are used.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our goals for the next three to five years include the implementation of annual development plans to expand our support base; the implementation of a national communications and public relations plan to reach even more communities focusing on younger populations; broadening our educational tools to empower more communities and direct social change; improving our website searchability and simplifying access to information. In the beginning of 2016, we implemented a comprehensive development plan including targeted stewardship and solicitations to identified populations, grant research and submission and prospect research. We also began an organizational-wide communications plan focusing on specific geographic regions and populations and we are working to devise additional educational tools and further market the ones we already offer including webinars, Patient Assistance Resource Education Course & Training and our bi-monthly E-Newsletter. These outreach efforts will directly benefit our target audience and bolster our strategic approach.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
After over two decades, NeedyMeds has accrued a wealth of institutional knowledge making it possible for us to finely hone our direction and approach moving forward. Most importantly, we have built dynamic databases specifically designed to track our myriad efforts from fundraising plans to educational efforts to public relations goals. In Late 2023 we will be launching an update our entire data system and website. This update will give our site visitors a much-needed comprehensive search experience. Our information technology capabilities will enable us to make all changes and improvements in house from the maintenance and improvement or our website to the additional creation of interactive technology for our consumers. We also have experienced staff members dedicated to all development efforts, comprehensive communication plans as well as consultants for grant writing and public relations to help enhance efforts. We have a dynamic and strong board of directors, a powerful partnership with Consumer Relations, are well rated by the Better Business Bureau and have accrued more than two dozen affiliates that join us to support our mission.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
NeedyMeds is continuously adapting to the political and social climate by updating, changing and increasing healthcare assistance programs and tools to meet current population needs to reach our ultimate goal of affordable, comprehensive healthcare for all. Since its inception, the NeedyMeds staff, support base, population served, programs offered and cost saved has multiplied many times over. We have learned that one-size fits all approach to growing our constituents and program creation is not effective. What does effectively work, instead, is targeted one-on-one communication for specific populations and the simplification of access to the resources we provide. Since we learn as we grow, our biggest risk factor remains the expenditure of resources in the pursuit of improvement that may not be as effective or fruitful as we plan. Our most prominent, steadfast obstacles continue to be cost-effectively and efficiently increasing awareness and believability - that we are not too good to be true!
To come we will be launching an update our entire data system and website. This update will give our site visitors a much-needed comprehensive search experience. Making our information quicker and easier to find for visitors to our website and a shorter call time for users of or toll free help number.

- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
