Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Kathy's Legacy Foundation serves children and pets impacted by domestic violence. We revive hope, restore normalcy, and inspire dreams in the lives of all victims of intimate partner violence. Children impacted from such trauma often experience post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, suicidal tendencies, night terrors, aggression, and bed wetting. Many victims will delay leaving their abusive situation for fear of leaving their pets behind, as family pets are often victims of domestic abuse as well. Our organization provides survivors with the assistance they need to not only survive, but thrive as they move forward with their lives.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Silver Lining
Our Silver Lining program assists children whose lives are traumatically altered by the murder of a parent due to domestic violence. Through no fault of their own they are orphaned by one senseless act. In some cases, the children witness the murder, the immediate aftermath, call 911, or provide CPR in an attempt to save their mothers’ lives. Every day, these children battle PTSD, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, night terrors, aggression, cutting, and/or bed wetting. Children traumatized often become stuck developmentally.
Elderly grandparents or other family members take guardianship of the children after the murder. At the same time, they are grieving, coping with the trauma of the homicide, and reliving the murder in court seeking justice for their loved ones. Often these loving family members are not financially, emotionally, or physically prepared to parent young children.
Our Silver Lining families receive monthly financial assistance to help with food, clothing, toiletries, household supplies, and gas. We provide opportunities for normalcy such as art, dance lessons, sports, and summer camps. Kathy's Legacy hosts family outings like an adventure at the Fleet Science Center, an afternoon of Bowling, and a behind the scenes day at the Zoo. The children form bonds knowing they are not alone and are creating new happy memories together.
In addition to monthly financial assistance the program funds guardianship fees, legal name changes, furniture, therapy, dental, and orthodontic treatment. We assist with school supplies, field trips, tutoring, and unexpected needs. All of the children are celebrated on their birthdays and holidays are remembered with themed activities.
The relationship we have with the families is one of trust. They feel comfortable to call us when they need a shoulder to cry on, a listening ear, or simply to share what is on their minds. We walk the journey with these vulnerable families from despair to hope.
These children are fresh reminders of the challenges that face the silent, under-served victims of domestic violence homicide. Kathy’s Legacy sees to the basic yet critical needs of these children and provides normalcy in their lives so they can experience the lost joys of childhood.
Lady's Legacy
People are not the only ones affected by domestic violence. Pets find themselves in the crossfire of abuse and are often targeted. Kathy’s Legacy supports projects that provide shelter and care for pets that belong to domestic violence victims. It is essential to get pets out of an abusive home for their own protection.
According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence 71% of women entering shelters that owned pets reported that their batterer had injured, killed or threatened to hurt their pet to psychologically control them or to get revenge.
Once victims leave, the abuse of their pets often increases. That concern often keeps people from leaving their batterer all together. According to the American Humane Association 25 % to 40% of victims don’t leave their abuser for fear of what will happen to their pet.
In many cases, victims are not able to take their pets with them once they leave a violent relationship. Most shelters and many apartments are not pet friendly so victims have limited options to care for their pets.
This is why Kathy's Legacy Foundation is also working to create a safehaven where pets of domestic violence victims will be taken care of free of charge.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Kathy’s Legacy aims to have a strong support program for children of domestic violence homicide through our Silver Lining program. The program enhances the existing Victim Advocacy Program to fulfill the needs of children experiencing the devastating murder of a parent from intimate partner violence. Providing nontraditional therapy along with traditional therapy helps children navigate their grief journey to healing. Kathy's Legacy also provides opportunities for normalcy for the children to experience the lost joys of childhood knowing that healing can take place through laughter, play and simply having fun.
Our Lady's Legacy program was inspired by Kathy's dog, Lady, who witnessed Kathy's murder. Pets are often unnoticed victims of domestic abuse and caught in the crossfire. Victims report batterers had injured, killed, or threatened to hurt their pets. This program aims to one day provide a formal support system for victims and their pets.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Kathy's Legacy Foundation raises funds each year to support our programs. The foundation has formed key partnerships to help provide services to victims at no cost. Additionally, leadership within the foundation is actively pursuing additional partnerships, donors, and grants to expand its ability to help victims.
Kathy's Legacy also actively collaborates with the San Diego District Attorney's office regarding the Silver Lining program for introductions to families impacted by domestic violence homicide.
Knowing pets are victims of domestic abuse prompted Kathy's Legacy to partner with San Diego Humane Society to join forces to launch a domestic violence program, which will provide a formal support system for victims and their pets. In the meantime, Kathy's Legacy has also partnered with Amazing Strays Rescue to provide long-term fostering for pets of victims. This allows victims to leave abusive situations and receive needed shelter services.
We communicate and partner with other local community organizations that share likeminded missions and goals.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Kathy's Legacy Foundation has grown in numbers and partnerships over its short lifespan. The foundation has secured influential and dedicated board members and volunteers who have demonstrated their passion for making Kathy's Legacy one of help and healing through providing life changing needed resources that are not readily available to most victims in the community free of charge.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Kathy's Legacy has accomplished a great deal in its short history. Programs we have implemented to assist victims of domestic violence are Silver Lining, Share the Dream, and Lady's Legacy. We have partnered with Rady's Children Chadwick Center, pediatric dentists, orthodontists, attorneys, and therapists to help the families with much needed support.
Kathy's Legacy provides families support with basic living needs including food, gas and clothing. In addition as needed per family we fund counseling, dental care, orthodontic care, therapy, adoption or guardianship aid, assistance with school field trips, summer camps, school supplies, and extracurricular activities.
All of our Silver Lining children are recognized on their birthdays and holidays, as well as participating in our Silver Lining group outings.
They have formed friendships with each other as a result of our family outings. They are also realizing they are not alone. Our family outings allow them to participate in social experiences they may not have the opportunity for otherwise, and promote their exposure to different activities and events from sports, to science and art.
In addition, through collaboration and teamwork with community partners we are seeing issues like pets in domestic violence situations, becoming a subject at the forefront of concern for decision-makers in our area.
