Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Voyage Theater Company's primary mission is to promote new and lesser-known plays and playwrights from around the world. Our goal is to broaden our audiences perspectives and cultivate a world view of current social issues. Cultural equity is at the heart of our mission, as we seek to amplify stories from underrepresented cultures and voices. We place a special emphasis on stories by women and BIPOC artists, and are actively anti-racist in our agenda.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
VTC engages with artists through various international organizations. We collaborate with playwrights and translators from around the world to present new English-language translations of plays, and offer shows in bi-lingual or multiple-language productions. In both our reading series and full productions, we place a priority on plays by women and BIPOC artists. We nurture new talent by providing opportunities to work in all disciplines of the theater. We encourage cross-cultural engagement by partnering with other not-for-profit organizations as a means of expanding our audience on every project.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Since our inception in 2012, Voyage Theater Company has presented plays from 20 different countries, engaged with 27 playwrights and more than 350 artists including directors, designers, actors, and technicians. Our work has been seen by more than 2,000 audience members in New York City. We have received grants and support from the Nationals Endowment for the Arts, Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, American Turkish Society, Russian-American Cultural Heritage Center, Alliance of Residence Theaters NY, and the Puffin Foundation. We have presented three world premiere productions, and toured our production of UNVEILED by Rohina Malik to the Grahamstown Arts Festival and the 969 Festival in South Africa.
VTC is currently collaborating with translator Amelia Parenteau on an Afro-Carribean play from Martinique which will be presented in New York City and tour locations around the United States and beyond.
