What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Haiti Air Ambulance strives to erase inequities in access to healthcare. Financial and geographic barriers prevent a majority of Haitians from accessing care at the level appropriate for their illness or injury. Haiti Air Ambulance provides free, high quality medical care, as well as transportation by air to an appropriate medical facility.
Additionally, Haiti Air Ambulance uses it's knowledgeable staff to provide free or low cost medical training to other care providers and citizens alike, seeking to expand knowledge of healthcare whenever possible.
Haiti Air Ambulance works with medical facilities and clinics to facilitate increased capabilities, from transport of medical supplies to partnering for specialty care needs.
Haiti Air Ambulance employs local staff at a living wage, providing continual training nd education to give each individual more marketable skills that will improve their lives in perpetuity.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Haiti Air Ambulance actively provides each of these items, and has for a number of years. Due to the increase in need, funds were raised for a second aircraft which will be delivered in early 2023.
Haiti Air Ambulance has partnered with local healthcare facilities and youth organizations to provide basic first aid and healthcare training to over 300 individuals so far in 2022.
Haiti Air Ambulance is partnering with established providers to expand the abilities of healthcare in the country such as improved pediatric care and full time surgical burn services in country.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
As an NGO present in Haiti 365 days per year, Haiti Air Ambulance has the connections and history to enable projects to succeed in the face of difficulties. Internally we possess the expertise and have the resources to be a leader in each initiative.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Over the course of the existence of HAA, we have transported over 1200 individual patients, flown dozens of support missions moving critical supplies, blood, and responding to disasters. In 2021 alone we transported over 450 patients, and saw the opportunity to add a second aircraft to our mission to increase capabilities.

- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
- We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
