What we aim to solve
The antidotes to problems such as isolation, discrimination, apathy and violence are building connections, creating new systems of fairness and equity, strengthening compassion and practicing peace. The Charter for Compassion focuses on these values by teaching and promoting programs for people and for schools, supporting local organizing in various cities around the world, highlighting the importance of kindness in businesses, engaging faith communities of all kinds, and finding ways of connecting our global family members to each other. There is so much we can accomplish when we work together, with patience, kindness, compassion and a desire for a better community. The Charter for Compassion works at the local level and the global level to engage people in co-creating a world that is kind, just, peaceful and benefits all people and the planet.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Growing Compassionate Cities
The concern of people in their communities is driven by the idea that beneath our culture of indifference runs a deep river of compassion, a vast aquifer of loving kindness waiting to be tapped, yearning to be released. In the 21st century, scientific evidence has mounted for compassion as an essential ingredient in maintaining thriving, healthy, resilient, and innovative enterprises, institutions, and communities. With this understanding, in 2013, more than 1,300 mayors (of U.S. cities exceeding 30,000) voted to endorse the Compassionate Cities Campaign. Mayors and civic leaders around the world are exploring compassion as their core strategy to build bridges across partisan divides and find innovative solutions. In 2014,The Council for a Parliament of the World’s Religions joined in a strategic partnership to support the emergence of the Compassionate Cities movement worldwide.
Compassionate Teacher Education Instititue and Compassion Education Summits
Education begins in the womb and continues as a part of us until the end of our lives. It is integral to our growth intellectually, culturally, socially, psychologically and even physically—for each of these areas of our development are intrinsically linked one to the other.
The Charter for Compassion believes that one of our primary responsibilities is to promote education for all that is based in secular ethics, social emotional learning, kindness and compassion. To that end, we have developed a Charter for Compassion Institute which offers a core group of signature courses on compassion and promotes coursework that supports curiosity, growth and compassionate action in the Charter’s twelve sectors (art, business, education, environment, healthcare, interfaith/religion/spirituality, peace, restorative justice, social justice, social services, science and research, women and girls). In addition, we collaborate with other partners to sponsor their offerings.
Think Equal
The Charter works with Think Equal, a UN Human Rights Office endorsed initiative, led by Leslee Udwin, that has created a ground-breaking new curriculum. It has been introduced into schools around the world and is teaching children a fundamental value system based on social emotional learning and compassion.
We helped to get Think Equal into 120 schools in Mexico and dozens of schools in the state of Victoria, AU.
Its most profound contribution to education is the Early Years Curriculum (the “EYC“) for children in the ages of 3 to 6 years. The EYC focuses on values of fairness, equal status, confidence to express one’s voice, courtesy, empathy and compassion
Golden Rule Day
Each year, on April 5, we celebrate the International Golden Rule Day with a 24-hour-long webcast that features people and organizations around the world who are doing good works, working for peace, and changing their communities through compassion and the Golden Rule. Please visit www.GoldenRuleDay.org to see previous video segments and past programming.
Ambassadors for the Women and Girls Sector
The role of the Women and Girls Ambassador is an opportunity open to all individuals who are involved and invested in the Charter for Compassion. Our Ambassadors are the real leaders of this sector. They help inform the Women and Girls Global Leadership about what is happening on the ground where they live, while representing the Charter for Compassion through the lens of Women and Girls. Our Ambassadors meet weekly on a video conference call and show up with their reports and their creativity, helping to develop programming and strategies for the sector. When out in their community, the Women and Girls Ambassadors attend local events as an Ambassador to CfC and bring the Charter to their organizations or activities. They also support Compassionate Cities where they live, bringing the voice of this sector to their community.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
While keeping all of the current programming in place, the Charter for Compassion has three major goals in 2022-23:
1. Focus on New Leadership
2. Focus on New Programming
3. Focus on New Connections
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Focus on New Leadership
• Increase Youth Engagement at all levels: leadership, staff, programs, and volunteers
• Reconvene and reconstitute the international Council of Conscience
Focus on New Programming
• Expand the scope of the Ed Net Forum gatherings
• Include a monthly Film Series in the program offerings
• Offer Trauma-Informed Compassion programs
Focus on New Connections
• Launch the Mapping Project and Circles of Co-creation
• Activate and support Compassionate Indonesia
• Design and promote Circles of Trust
• Reach out to new audiences through the Compassionate Articles Project
• Explore project possibilities with new strategic partners: ProSocial; ProSocial World; Pocket Project, and International Futures Forum
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The Charter for Compassion has support at many levels to help actualize these goals:
- Global, dynamic, and engaged Board of Trustees
- Caring network of 300+ volunteers who make things happen locally and globally
- Expanded partner base from 2,500 to 3,000
- Growing global audience from 150,000 to 160,000
- New programs currently being developed
- Seasoned, capable, and committed staff
- Solid network of 450+ Compassionate Cities; with hundreds of cities working on compassionate initiatives that are changing their communities
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
So far, 2022 has been a dynamic year. We are well-under way on the Mapping project. The Council of Conscience has met a few times and they are deciding on criteria for new nominees. Youth Involvement has a small team drafting a plan and is gaining some momentum. Compassionate Indonesia has a local team working on several initiatives.
What's next? The Board, staff, and volunteers will continue to amplify current connections and create new ones so that a global network of caring and dedicated people, partners, and cities will be better able to cultivate compassion in all that we do, where we live, and in loving relationship to each other, animals, and the Earth.
