Virtual Connect Groups

Adult Connect Groups were created May 2020 in response to a need. Families shared that people with disabilities were experiencing extreme isolation and disconnection with friends due to COVID 19 outbreak. The program began as a 4-week pilot to give adults with disabilities a platform to engage with old and new friends. A facilitator set up the zoom meetings and serves as moderator to promote social interaction and activity negotiation. Currently there are 8-12 consistent attendees who also plan in person outings.
Expansion has included a Teen Connect group for ages 13-17 with the same goal. This group is led by graduate and undergraduate students from regional universities with 2-4 additional volunteers participating weekly. Individuals have developed friendships which have led deeper relationships outside of group.
Both groups have observed improved self-advocacy, communication, and deepening relationships in a safe space. They are FREE and open to any individual with a disability.
