What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Safe House
The Poiema Foundation operates a Safe House for adult female survivors of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation, offering shelter, safety, trauma-informed counseling, medical care, and therapeutic services essential to recovery and rebuilding. Residents often attend at least 2 counseling sessions per month, as well as having access to a series of therapeutic supports (equine therapy, art therapy, EDMR, group therapy, etc.) that are all designed to help them face and heal from the traumas they endured as a product of their abuse. In addition to housing, safety, and trauma-informed care, we also provide the groceries and household items (linens, toiletries, cleaning supplies, etc.) that allow our residents and our staff to make the safe house a home.
Human Trafficking Eduction Program
The Poiema Foundations offers a suite of 7 different trainings focused on: (1) Understanding, identifying, and preventing Human Trafficking in our communities; (2) interacting with, caring for, and supporting victims of human trafficking on their journey toward healing; and (3) the way recent developments in the internet and the prevalence of pornography make our communities more susceptible to the predatory actions of potential traffickers. As of November (2024), we have educated more than 34,000 individuals across Texas, including teachers, students, counselors, minors and staff in juvenile detention centers, law enforcement, churches, and rotary clubs and other community-focused organizations. The state of Texas also approves us to provide our Human Trafficking 101 to medical professionals as part of the licensing (and renewal) process.
Community Engagement
Poiema operates a community engagement program wherein we invite the public to be eyes and ears in the identification and recovery of local missing youth. We have 18 different teams that go out into their communities across the DFW metroplex each month distributing posters of local missing youth to places of business, first responders, and other public facilities in the hopes that missing children can be found and returned to safety before potential traffickers can recruit them. The Department of Health and Human Services estimates that, on average, a runaway will be approached by a potential trafficker within 72 hours of being on the street, so this work is a critical component of our efforts to stop the cycle of abuse and exploitation driven by human trafficking. As of November (2024), we have helped recover more than 480 missing youth in north Texas.
