What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Alcohol addiction is the most prevalent of substance use disorders, affecting over 15 million people in the United States. An estimated 88,000 people per year die from alcohol-related causes, making it the third leading preventable cause of death in the US. To reduce the number of needless deaths from alcohol: • Further research is needed to develop more effective medications and behavioral interventions • Public awareness of existing treatments must include multiple strategies, awareness of what recovery means, & effective ways to connect to treatment • Widespread obstacles to treatment access such as cost, limited space in programs, & shortage of health care workers, must be addressed Giving to addiction has historically been less robust than for other health issues like cancer or heart disease. Funding is badly needed all across the field to spark innovation and lead to transformation.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

A national, community-supported grantmaking foundation, PGDF raises and distributes funds to surface new treatment options, elevate public awareness, and facilitate access to recovery from alcohol addiction.

By making grants to exemplary non-profit organizations, we work to:
• Develop and test new medications and behavioral interventions for alcohol use disorder (AUD)
• Identify the causative roots of AUD
• Promote a “yes-and,” toolbox approach to AUD recovery that includes multiple strategies and modalities
• Raise public awareness about AUD signs and symptoms, treatment, and recovery
• Encourage the growth of innovative and effective local and national programs that promote AUD recovery
• Address local and systemic obstacles to AUD treatment access

PGDF has three distinct grantmaking tracks for addressing our organizational goals.

1. Research Grants – Awarded for work that tests or develops new interventions for AUD, or explores its causative roots. Preference is given to pilot or feasibility studies that open new areas of inquiry.
2. Vision Grants –Initiating partnerships that advance the ideals of our Vision Statement. Application for Vision Grants is by invitation.
3. Mission Grants – Our cornerstone open-application grant program, Mission Grants are for organizations that provide services, advocacy, or training related to alcohol use disorder. Successful applicants demonstrate innovation, gather & share outcome data, & indicate potential to scale programs.

Additionally, the PGDF Treatment Guide, housed on our website, is a comprehensive & easy-to-navigate guide that details over 50 topics & 140 resources to help people understand AUD & its treatment. The PGDF Treatment Guide is free to use & available 24/7.

PGDF has established a reputation as a capable, forward-thinking organization that works with world-class partners to achieve lasting change. We are the only non-governmental grantmaker in the United States dedicated to promoting recovery from alcohol use disorder.

Our fundraising strategy is similar to that used by community foundations nationwide—namely that we are a vehicle for supporters to pool their resources for greatest impact.

Capabilities include:

• Proven track record of four successful grant cycles with significant impact
• Expert Advisory Council comprised of accomplished professionals from across the addiction field
• In-depth topical knowledge of AUD and engagement with current issues
• Connections to top leaders in addiction science, medicine, and advocacy
• Efficient, rigorous, and effective systems for evaluating proposals
• Entrepreneurial, nimble operating style keeps overhead low

In our first five grant cycles, PGDF has:
• Presented educational events and resources on AUD to the public that have reached over 100,000 people
• Funded three innovative pilot studies on novel strategies for treating AUD, opening new areas of scientific inquiry
• Supported AUD-related training and education for an estimated 800 leaders in the addiction field
• Sponsored reduced-cost treatment, referral to treatment, or treatment-enhancing services for approximately 1,000 people
