What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue is called upon for assistance by the Detroit Police Department and Detroit Animal Care and Control often due to the over population of stray dogs in the city of Detroit. Detroit Animal Care and Control relies on Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue to assist by rescuing dogs with severe medical concerns, due to the required care in order to save and rescue the abundance of dogs in Detroit that are found severely injured, not being in the budget of Detroit Animal Care and Control. Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue rescues only sick, injured or pregnant dogs, provides the veterinary care that is required and desperately needed to save the injured dogs life and then transfers the dog after healed and fully vetted, to other 501(c)(3) animal rescue organizations for placement and adoption. The transfer partners of Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue assist by taking the rescued dogs into their organizations, making it possible for Detroit Pit Crew to rescue the many more in need.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Detroit Pit Crew Stray Dog Rescue aims to help get as many sick, injured and pregnant dogs off of the streets of Detroit. The amount of stray dogs in the city of Detroit alarmingly increases each and every day, many of the dogs found as strays once had owners but were abandoned or left behind, many of which purposeful. A domesticated dog will have trouble surviving on their own in the streets, many find abandoned homes in the city of Detroit and end up injured by accident or purposeful actions made by humans. Many dogs die every day in Detroit, from both injuries and starving to death, due to being unable to survive on their own in the streets. Our goal is to rescue as many dogs off of the streets of Detroit, provide them with the proper medical care they require and place them in an organization where they can find a home and being a new start.

The volunteers of Detroit Pit Crew come from a variety of backgrounds and experience. Many of our volunteers come from law enforcement and animal welfare experience. Some of our volunteers are Detroit Police Officers, who have witnessed the stray dog abundance in the city and volunteer their assistance to help these animals get rescued from the streets. Another one of our volunteers is a licensed veterinary technician and is also certified Animal Control Officer who oversees the Animal Control Department for the City of Eastpointe. We have volunteers who are ASPCA trained behavioral specialists, to assist with behavioral assessments to determine the proper foster homes for the dogs and professional trappers. We take a different approach with capturing and trapping, which at times does take days, however these techniques are less stressful on the dogs we are rescuing, that are already very stressed and nervous.

Detroit Pit Crew is funded by donations from the public, we do not have any paid employees in our organization. Our current bills for veterinary services for our rescued dogs exceed $10,000 each month due to severity of the injuries of the dogs we rescue. With more partnerships, resources, education and more donations, we can save many more dogs from having to live their lives on the streets of Detroit.

In 2018, we have rescued over 450 sick, injured and pregnant dogs from the streets of Detroit. Our numbers of rescued dogs have greatly increased, but we believe with with more support, fosters, volunteers and donations from supporters, we will be able to go above and beyond what we already accomplish. We would eventually like to have a facility, to safely house and care for the neglected, abandoned and injured dogs until healthy and ready to be transferred for adoption.
