Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Fast Forward's goal is to connect tech nonprofits with the capital, connections, and community they need to be successful. In doing so, we aim to increase the capacity for technology to solve social issues.

To achieve these goals, Fast Forward builds products and programs to grow the tech nonprofit sector by enabling tech nonprofits to maximize their impact, and inspiring other entrepreneurs to start their own tech nonprofits. These strategies are employed under a framework of providing content, connections, and capital:

Content: We publish useful content via our blog and partner publications to educate tech nonprofit entrepreneurs, produce a monthly roundup with the most important sector news [What's Good in Tech?], and organize an annual sector-defining Summit [Accelerate Good Global].

Connections: Facilitate meaningful sector relationships via our Accelerator, Volunteer Board, Directory, Online Global Tech Nonprofit Community, and Mentorship connections.

Capital: Provide grants to Accelerator cohort and connect tech nonprofits with follow-on funding.

Operationally, Fast Forward is powered by a team of nine full time staff, including co-founders from tech and nonprofit startups, and a PR/marketing leader. Our operations are supplemented by the support of tech nonprofit entrepreneurs, funder, and tech for good enthusiasts globally. Our capabilities lie in our expertise in the areas of nonprofits, fundraising, startups, and technology. Fast Forward acts boldly in our pursuit to grow the tech nonprofit ecosystem.

Since 2014, Fast Forward has been successful in growing the tech nonprofit sector. We've accelerated 79 tech nonprofits, impacting over 105 million lives, and leading to over $357M in follow on funding,

We've also produced the first and only job and volunteer board focused on tech nonprofits, the first and only comprehensive directory of the tech nonprofit sector, the first and only data report examining the state of diversity and funding in the tech nonprofit sector, and organized an annual social impact summit, Accelerate Good Global.

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
  • We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
  • We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
  • We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
  • We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
Policies and processes
  • We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
