Education

EDUCATION is the heart of Maisha, molding the minds of tomorrow’s leaders to transform their community and nation. At-risk children and youth, baby through continuing education, have received education through the Legacy of Hope Project which funds school fees and educational expenses. Children sponsored through Legacy of Hope attend almost 130 schools throughout Nyanza Province. Many of the Legacy of Hope recipients attend Maisha Academy. Dormitories provide housing for students who are at-risk because of unsafe or compromised positions at home. The dorms allow students to break free from distractions, focus on their studies and be monitored more closely by teachers to ensure their academic success.

Other educational and mentoring initiatives are done in coordination with sponsorship. Youth rallies with local leaders are hosted to mentor and discuss future planning and goals with the children.

To ensure proper nutrition for learning capability, Maisha runs a feeding project as part of it's education program. Maisha Academy students at the boarding school will receive three meals a day. Feeding is also supported in local partner schools to supplement their lunch programs with supplies.

MISSIONS partners bring tools and resources to facilitate lasting solutions. Four or more mission teams travel to Kenya every year. They work side by side with the local community building, hosting classes, exchanging ideas and promoting the spiritual life of children and adults. Each team is unique in how they serve at Maisha and picks a legacy project to support. Team Maisha plays a vital role in accomplishing our goals and mission. At the same time, serving on Team Maisha opens up the opportunity for individuals to put their passion into action and share their gifts with the Maisha community.

People with HIV/AIDS

HEALTH comes with access to clean water, healthcare, improved nutrition and spiritual nourishment. To meet the health challenges of our growing Maisha community, a full-service out-patient clinic exists. The clinic’s goal is to provide medical access so treatable conditions such as malaria will no longer result in death. A pharmacy, known in Kenya as a dispensary, is located within the clinic. No other health care facilities are within a reasonable walking distance to serve the community. In an area where the main mode of transport is walking and with so many affected by HIV and other seriously disabling diseases, having a nearby clinic and dispensary is essential. We want to raise up Legacy of Hope graduates who dream of becoming doctors and health care professionals to serve in their own community.

Care & encouragement are given to those living with HIV/AIDS through Living Positive, our home based care project in the villages around Kisumu and in the Nyalenda slums branch office. Home based care workers and volunteers are sent each week to help care for clients by praying, witnessing, counseling, providing medical care and taking groceries as they can. They also monitor ARV adherence, nourishment, water, sanitation and children’s educational progress for each household. We assist Nyalenda residents to start their own small scale businesses to create a source of revenue for themselves and their families. We also established a dedicated feeding project to help reduce stress and give their bodies the fuel they need to combat diseases and take their medicine.

Maisha also hosts health and HIV/AIDS educational rallies, partners with organizations to provide water, hygiene and sanitation education to children at Maisha and throughout local schools. Through mosquito net distributions, access to nutrition and these other health projects, Maisha boosts the overall health and longevity of the community.

The goal of Maisha’s Economic Empowerment Project is to provide the resources necessary to work towards sustainability. Through strategic investments in social enterprises, we diversify our income sources and support the work of Maisha locally while creating employment opportunities. The mission of Economic Empowerment is to promote social enterprises for Maisha’s sustainability and youth socio-economic empowerment, which creates the platform for peacebuilding.

This began successfully on a small scale through table banking, providing micro-finance loans for individuals to implement income-generating projects and discuss better business methods. Members quickly multiplied their initial seed funding and continued to grow the funding pool, offering larger loans to those with successful records. Partners invested in sewing machines, bore hole equipment, tuk-tuk’s and other endeavors. We're launching a further sustainable phase with three pilot endeavors to bring us closer to food, water and economic security. 1.) Dairy Enterprise, 2.) Horticulture and 3.) Community Water Projects.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Maisha Project is committed to bringing hope to the hopeless and light to the darkness. Our mission is to transform lives and empower communities by providing lasting solutions to address poverty, hunger, disease and under-education. The year 2021 was by far extremely difficult. Maisha Project was able to pivot where needed and continued to impact the lives of so many vulnerable children and families during the global pandemic.

To address poverty, hunger, disease and under-education we were able to do the following in 2021:

1. We shipped a 40ft container filled with food to Kenya and it provided over 385,000 additional meals to help address hunger and poverty. We served close to 1,000,000 meals in 2021 to our partner schools both in Turkana and Kisumu.
2. To help with disease we distributed 10,000 masks throughout Kisumu and Turkana.
3. To help with under-education we graduated 129 students from all three levels of our education program; 44 from primary school, 55 from high school and 30 graduated from college.
4. To help with disease we continued to operate our community medical clinic and provide vital healthcare to families in need. 4,295 patients were treated in our facility.
5. To help with disease we also coordinated spring and summer break trips to Kenya by medical mission groups.
