SUCCESS THROUGH EDUCATION PROGRAM
Ending the Cycle of Recidivism
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
STEP is working to end the cycle of recidivism in San Mateo County.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Recidivism Reduction Program
Previously incarcerated adults reentering society after serving their sentences face significant challenges as they try to adjust to life outside jail. In order to reduce recidivism, our clients require foundational courses, job training, mentorship, and educational services to ensure an opportunity for a good job.
The STEP program consists of six unique modules, which our clients complete in the following order:
1. Assessment of skills needed and interests necessary for vocational or educational pursuits.
2. Academic and vocational advising resulting in a written comprehensive, multi-year plan towards achievement of a job.
3. Seminars in areas such as financial literacy, employment preparation, education and vocational foundational courses, etc.
4. One-on-one mentoring providing coaching through execution of multi-year planning.
5. Educational financial aid funding resources information, child-care subsidies, and scholarships.
6. Paid and unpaid internships.
Services are comprehensively provided as needed singularly to each individual to ensure successful re-entry and gainful employment to eliminate recidivism by working in tandem and continuously with education institutions, as well as related existing non-profit community organizations that provide additional resources (housing, counseling, dependency, abuse, etc.). STEP strongly feels that when our clients complete this program, they will be well equipped to become successfully contributing members of their communities.
