Population(s) Served

Food Matters! is an innovative health promotion approach to combating heart disease and diabetes in adults and seniors. These diseases disproportionally impact individuals living in poverty and people of color. This groundbreaking program -- the only one of its kind to CEI’s knowledge – provides access to fresh and dried foods as well as nutritional supplements geared to the needs of individuals combatting such chronic conditions as coronary artery disease or diabetes, or who may have health-related dietary needs for low salt/sugar or gluten-free foods. Such foods are frequently unavailable or prohibitively expensive in urban supermarkets or bodegas, and virtually unheard of in food pantries. Nutrition education, weight and blood pressure/blood sugar/cholesterol screenings are provided free of charge through collaborations with Immaculata University and the Crozer Keystone Health System.
