Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Solidarilabs
SolidariLabs is a program developed by Skylight designed to foster regional cohorts of media makers, artists, movement actors, and human rights organizations to collaboratively create enduring media ecosystems that advance a shared mission, whether it be to defend indigenous or women’s rights, battle extractive industries, or promote transitional justice. Each region will have its set of social justice priorities, and SolidariLabs will adapt accordingly, guided by expert facilitators and teams of mentors.
The Resistance Saga Tour
The Resistance Saga is a cinematic project designed to galvanize audiences to fight back when society is faced with authoritarianism and demagogues, and celebrate the role that the arts can play in creating, strengthening, and communicating narratives of nonviolent resistance. In so many ways, indigenous peoples throughout the Americas have set the example of long-term courageous and strategic resistance against daunting odds, with a powerful example being the saga of the Mayan people as depicted in director Pamela Yates’ films When the Mountains Tremble, Granito: How to Nail a Dictator and the latest installment, 500 Years: Life in Resistance. The event is a day-long immersive gathering that includes the screening of all three films, with two 15-minute intermissions, followed by a discussion on long-term movement building with the Mayan women protagonists, and a reception and concert by Mayan singer/songwriter Sara Curruchich singing her inspiring songs of resistance.
VIVX
VIVX is designed to be a mutual support network to promote the social protection of defenders and activist filmmakers through their stories, which will be told in film profiles created in collaboration between them, sharing their struggles and the reasons they risk their lives to protect their communities and their lands. In public campaigns that will be launched by the VIVX network, these narratives will challenge the “official story” that seeks to stigmatize and criminalize human rights and environmental defenders as terrorists or enemies of economic development. Instead, the campaigns will uphold the positive concept that defenders are seeding the future by protecting the earth for all of us, as the first line of defense.
The VIVX network has as its connective tissue a mobile application developed collaboratively with defenders based on their own suggestions, expressed needs, preferences, and resources that they have requested.
