Autism Storytelling for Positive Change
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
The truth is that the general public still understands very little about the autism diagnosis—and what they do know is often shrouded in misconceptions and negative stereotypes. Autistic individuals have been disenfranchised and discriminated against because we live in a society that: 1) fears what they do not understand, 2) views autism as a disability and not a part of human diversity, and 3) does not recognize the true value autistic individuals bring to their communities and the workplace. This is a human rights issue: We can no longer isolate autistic individuals, ignore their needs and deny them access to equitable opportunities for living their best lives.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Autism EDU for Acceptance and Inclusion
Autism EDU is a collection of educational tools to introduce autism in the classroom or in the community. We have a team of autistic contributors, educational specialists, and clinical advisors who produce Autism EDU interactive stories, digital comics, videos, curriculum, parent/teacher guides and student handouts. Educators—elementary school, special education, Speech and Language Therapists, counselors and gift and talent teachers—parents, and autistic individuals who want to advocate for themselves are able to access and use everything for free. Our goal is to help families and educators create inclusive communities where everyone feels welcome and valued. Autism EDU has been developed to capture and engage students’ attention, ignite their curiosities and inspire discussions.
Zoom Autism Magazine for Empowerment and Advocacy
Zoom Autism Magazine is a Geek Club Books’ program for autistic writers and editors. They contribute thought provoking essays, personal accounts, and advice about living on the spectrum. The objective is to empower through creative self-expression while educating the general public about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and to eliminate common misconceptions and negative stereotypes. Zoom gives the community-at-large a deeper understanding about the autism experience. The quarterly digital magazine is powerful, uplifting and is changing the world’s view of autism.
Bluebee TeeVee Autism Information Station for Young Children
Bluebee TeeVee, Autism Information Station, a video series where children learn all about autism—in a friendly, clinically correct and respectful manner with humor and pop culture references thrown in for fun. The series helps children see past differences, learn acceptance and understanding, and the discover that we’re all pretty much the same at heart. Each episode is written, filmed, and performed by two autistic individuals. The series is produced in collaboration with Kayle Concepts and Quality Services for the Autism Community (QSAC). Each episode comes with an episode guide for educators and parents who wish to delve deeper into a particular topic.
"Explain Autism" and "Autistic Hero" Comics
Everything Geek Club Books does, even our name, is focused on destigmatizing differences, encouraging pride in our diversity and celebrating our uniqueness. Our autism comics give readers the message that autism isn’t something that needs to be feared and the autistic never have to feel ashamed of who they are. We create two styles of autism comics: 1) Mighty League interactive comics for children that are narrative, entertaining and based on a real autistic person; and, 2) “Explain Autism” comics by autistic advocates to educate the public about autism facts. Our goal for these comics is to educate the public and make sure that autistic individuals see a reflection of themselves in literature and pop culture.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Geek Club Books exists to help autistic voices rise to forefront so they can speak out for themselves and change the public’s narrative about autism. We bring autistic individuals creative opportunities that are meaningful and empowering, develop their leadership skills and actively supports their advocacy for a more accepting and inclusive world. We want the autistic population to feel valued, appreciated and live openly and honestly without fear or shame.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our approach is to be a part of pop culture—to use technology and the art of storytelling to educate children and adults about autism.
We subscribe to “Nothing about us, without us,” way of operating which means everything we do includes autistic contributors and advisors. They are actively involved in the creation of our interactive comics for kids, “explain autism” comics, public awareness campaigns, school assemblies, classroom visits, curriculum, Zoom Autism Magazine, informational e-books and a children’s video series.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We were founded by a passionate, fully committed family who pays all operational and fundraising expenses, so 100% of every dollar raised directly supports our programs and funds payment to our autistic contributors for their work.
We have an expertise in project management, community building and using social media as a vehicle for inspiring change. We are all storytellers who are passionate about using our talents and abilities in service of this marginalized and underserved population. Everyone who works with us is either an autistic individual or a person who has a loved one with autism. We understand on a deep and emotional level the importance of changing the world's views and ending the stigma of autism.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Geek Club Books website has grown to become a robust source of autistic-generated information, personal experiences, and educational resources which we make available for free to download. We activated autistic advocates and television, film and Broadway stage actors to speak out in unity for autism, reaching over 3 million people through our #Activate4Autism campaign. We sparked curiosities of over 1,000 elementary school children through our Marvel comic style assemblies and became a part of geek culture when our autistic team members were panelists at popular Comic Cons. What’s next? We are working with our libraries on the creation of “Neurodiversity Corners” and speaker series featuring a curated collection of literature and resources that prioritize neurodiversity and autistic pride. It is our hope that this collaboration will be a model that other community libraries across the country can implement.
