What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

TONIGHT:
193,000 Americans will sleep on the streets, under bridges and “other places not intended for human habitation”. That is 35% of the total homeless population of 553,742 people (source: The state of homelessness in America, Jan 2017, HUD). Housing solutions are needed to ultimately get people off the street. However, when people don't have access to housing or shelter the Backpack Bed provides immediate assistance to keep people alive. Our Backpack Bed program is study proven to improve homeless people's dignity, health, sleep, warmth, comfort and safety. The Backpack Bed has been specifically designed as a lightweight portable emergency bed for homeless people. It is made from fire retardant, waterproof and mildew resistant fabric and contains a mattress. The Backpack Bed allows for carrying of belongings and it only takes seconds to setup and pack away.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

To provide a Backpack Bed to all homeless people across the US that does not have access to housing and shelter - to keep them alive.
And in doing so ensure they are connected to a local homeless agency for their continued care.

We partner with existing homeless agencies that already assist homeless people sleeping on the street.
That way we can add value to their existing programs and reach many homeless people without setting up additional infrastructure.

This is a proven strategy that has been used in numerous countries to date.

In 2007 the Backpack Bed for Homeless was founded as a national charity in Australia. They have provided Backpack Beds to street sleeping homeless people in 8 countries. This program was a awarded an Australian Human Rights Award by the Australian Human Rights Commission as well as 7 international product design awards for the Backpack Bed.

Due to the demand and need Backpack Bed for Homeless Inc. was established in 2014 in the USA.
The same team that grew the program across Australia - where they distribute Backpack Beds in partnership with over 650 homeless agencies - will oversee the US program implementation.

To date we have partnered with a small number of homeless agencies across the USA as a pilot program to show the need for our program exists.

Now that we have 501(c) 3 status our aim is to scale our Backpack Bed program in cities across the USA - starting in Nashville.
