What we aim to solve
Only real problem is getting people in the door once again. Even though we re-opened in Dec 2018 people are still learning where we are. As with any non-profit money is a real concern. We have hired a part-time Resource Development/Fundraising Coordinator to help us with this.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Dakota Territorial Museum
The Dakota Territorial Museum strives to preserve, protect and educate the public through our exhibits and programs. In December 2018 we opened a children's museum that focuses on the different modes of transportation people used to get to the Dakota Territory.
Feed Your Mind
This is our monthly speaker program, hosted on the first Friday of the month. Historical topics relating to the Yankton area, on occasion we tie it to a new exhibit that has opened, book readings and signings from South Dakota authors as well.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
In December 2018 the Yankton County Historical Society opened the doors of the Mead Cultural Education Center - the new home of the Dakota Territorial Museum. We began in 2012, and we still have a lot of work to d before we are completely done. This building was built in 1909 as part of the Dakota Hospital for the Insane.
Our goal is not only preserve and protect the items already entrusted to our care, but also preserve and protect in this historic old building. By saving one we save the other.
One of our goals to to open people's minds and eyes to the rich history that is in this area. Many are still learning we are out here, which is amazing because the museum has actually been in existence in 1936 when the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution opened Yankton's First Museum.
We are simultaneously re-cataloging the entire Museum collection using modern preservation methods and database systems.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We work with staff and volunteers to fundraise, catalog, renovate, and design the Mead Building.
We are open 6 days a week
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Really is comes downs to the continued hard work and dedication of our small staff, and our wonderful volunteers.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
