What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Education
United Way of Lincoln and Lancaster County provides funding to programs that address Educational Supports, Expanded Learning and Youth Development. The goal is to provide support to increase Lincoln Public School's graduation rate to 90% by 2022.
Health
An individual’s physical environment, combined with social and economic determinants, can greatly affect an individual’s physical and mental health. Evidence also strongly suggests that adverse childhood experiences such as exposure to trauma (violence, abuse or neglect) or insufficient basic needs cause lasting negative harm. We provide funding to programs in our community that address Victim Safety, Youth Behavioral Health and Emergency Response. Our goal is to improve Lincoln's Well-Being index score from 62.5% to 63.5%.
Financial Stability
Life expectancy in Lincoln's impoverished neighborhoods is on average 20 years less when compared to other, higher-income neighborhoods. These same areas see an increase in child obesity and lack of educational attainment for many adults. Our goal is to reduce Lincoln's population living under 200% of the Federal Poverty Level from 35% to 30%. We fund programs in our community that address Financial Capability, Food Insecurity, Shelter, and Workforce Development.
Ride United: Last Mile Delivery
United Way’s Ride United Last Mile Delivery initiative, in partnership with DoorDash, is a successful national program fulfilling food insecurity needs. As one of only 31 communities nationwide to pilot this initiative, United Way of Lincoln and Lancaster County brought Ride United to our community in the fall of 2020. Each week, Dashers pick up bags of shelf stable food organized by Pantry Partners like the Food Bank of Lincoln and deliver them at no cost to neighbors who are unable to access food on their own, including veterans.
ENGAGE.EMPOWER.GRADUATE.
Together we’re identifying and addressing the disadvantages that children and families face in local elementary school communities to ensure children and their families, regardless of circumstances, have the opportunity to succeed in school and life through these key strategies:
Early Childhood Development
Family Engagement and Support
Adult Education
Mental Health and Family Support
Extended Learning Opportunities
Youth Development
Prevention Services
Stable. Strong. Successful.
When a student lives in a home with limited resources and survival is the day-to-day goal, parents have tough choices to make, impacting their child's ability to go to school. Providing support to families and giving them the tools they need to be stable increases school attendance and overall academic achievement.
Stable. Strong. Successful. is an initiative that provides targeted programs at a neighborhood level, ensuring families will have access to much-needed resources and support to stabilize their home life.

Equity strategies
Last updated: 03/18/2022GuideStar partnered with Equity in the Center - an organization that works to shift mindsets, practices, and systems to increase racial equity - to create this section. Learn more
- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
