What we aim to solve
Beatrice Humane Society (BHS) exists to address the systemic challenges of animal homelessness, pet overpopulation, and lack of access to affordable veterinary care in Southeast Nebraska. As the region’s only open-admission, no-kill shelter, BHS works to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals, while preventing future suffering through proactive community education and targeted spay/neuter initiatives. We aim to solve: - High stray animal populations leading to overcrowded shelters - Inaccessible or unaffordable veterinary services in rural areas - Low public awareness about responsible pet ownership and humane treatment - Limited youth engagement with animal welfare and empathy-driven education
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Camp Paw Paw and Humane Education Programs
Our Humane Education initiatives inspire the next generation of animal advocates through engaging, age-appropriate programming. At Summer Camp Paw Paw, youth explore animal care, shelter operations, and compassion-based ethics through hands-on learning, crafts, and interactive activities. Year-round, our outreach brings humane education to schools and communities, promoting empathy, responsible pet ownership, and safety around animals. These efforts empower children and families to be lifelong allies in our no-kill mission.
Low-Cost Spay & Neuter Clinic
Our clinic provides affordable, accessible sterilization services to reduce pet overpopulation and improve community health across Southeast Nebraska. As part of our no-kill mission, we offer high-quality care regardless of income, helping owned pets and community cats live healthier lives. With targeted outreach in underserved areas, we support responsible pet ownership while reducing shelter intake and euthanasia rates. Every procedure is a step toward a more humane and sustainable future.
Stray Animal Intake and Reunion/Adoption
At the heart of Beatrice Humane Society’s mission is a steadfast commitment to being Southeast Nebraska’s only open-admission, no-kill shelter. Through our Stray Holding, Reunion, and Adoption Program, we provide a compassionate pathway from rescue to forever home. Stray Holding: We offer a safe haven for lost and abandoned animals, ensuring they receive shelter, medical care, and emotional support while waiting to be reunited or rehomed. Reunion Efforts: We works diligently to reconnect lost pets with their families through proactive outreach, social media sharing, and microchip scanning. We have an annual return to owner rate of over 60% which surpasses most if not all larger and smaller shelters in Nebraska and the Midwest. Adoption Services: For animals not claimed, our adoption program matches them with loving homes. Each placement is guided by our no-kill promise—every animal stays in our care until they find a family, no matter how long it takes.
Program 2
IN MAY OF 2023, WE OPENED THE DOORS OF OUR PUBLIC FACING LOW-COST SPAY AND NEUTER CLINIC. WE HAVE KNOWN FOR MANY YEARS THAT ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE PREVENTATIVE CARE HAS BEEN IMPACTING THE INCOME RESTRICTED FAMILIES IN OUR COMMUNITIES. PROPORTIONALLY THEY PROVIDE A LARGER NUMBER OF STRAYS, SURRENDERS AND PET RETENTION ASSISTANCE REQUESTS THAN OTHER PARTS OF OUR COMMUNITY. BY PROVIDING THEM ASSISTANCE TO GET PREVENTATIVE VETERINARY CARE SUCH AS SPAYS AND NEUTERS, WE WILL SEE A DECREASE IN THE NUMBER OF ANIMALS BEING SURRENDERED AND BY INCLUDING MICROCHIPPING IN OUR PACKAGES WE HOPE TO BE ABLE TO REUNITE THEM WITH THE FAMILIES THAT LOVE THEM EASIER. WE ARE ECSTATIC ABOUT BEING ABLE TO OFFER TRAP, VACCINATE, NEUTER AND RETURN TO THEIR HOME TO THE FERAL CATS IN OUR COMMUNITIES AT A PRICE POINT THAT CITIES, TOWNS AND EVEN INDIVIDUAL OWNERS CAN ACCESS THAT CARE. WE KNOW THAT THIS IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE FORM OF OUTDOOR CAT POPULATION CONTROL AND ARE EXCITED TO SEE OUR COMMUNITIES IMPROVE WITH THE ROLLOUT OF THE TVNR PROGRAM. FINALLY, WE ARE ALSO PROVIDING IN HOUSE SPAYS AND NEUTERS AS WELL AS ADDITIONAL ADVANCED VETERINARY CARE FOR OUR SHELTER ANIMALS ALLOWING US TO PROVIDE THEM THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF CARE THEY DESERVE WHILE PROVIDING US CRITICAL ADDITIONAL CAPACITY TO CARE FOR AS MANY ANIMALS AS WE CAN ALONG THEIR PATH TO ADOPTION.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
BHS is guided by a compassionate, forward-thinking mission that centers animal welfare, community engagement, and sustainable impact. Our goals include:
- Achieve and maintain a 95%+ Live Release Rate annually, far exceeding no-kill standards and ensuring that every adoptable animal has a pathway to a loving home.
- Reduce pet overpopulation through scalable low-cost spay and neuter programs that serve both owned pets and community cats.
- Expand humane education and youth engagement, fostering empathy and responsibility in future generations through programming like Summer Camp Paw Paw and school outreach.
- Strengthen public health outcomes by addressing zoonotic risks such as rabies, and promoting responsible pet care in underserved communities.
- Build replicable models of rural community engagement and trap-neuter-vaccinate-return (TVNR) that can be scaled across Nebraska and beyond.
- Ensure financial sustainability through diversified fundraising events, grant writing, and strategic partnerships.
- Create safe reunification pathways for lost pets through digital outreach, microchip scanning, and community collaboration.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
To achieve these goals, Beatrice Humane Society uses an integrated, community-first strategy built on compassion, transparency, and innovation:
- Accessible Veterinary Care: Through our low-cost spay/neuter clinic, we remove financial barriers to pet sterilization, with outreach focused on rural areas most affected by pet overpopulation.
- Data-Driven Animal Management: We utilize best-practice shelter metrics like Save Rate and Live Release Rate to monitor performance, benchmark nationally, and drive continuous improvement.
- Humane Education & Youth Programming: Our year-round school partnerships and Summer Camp Paw Paw cultivate empathy and understanding in children, positioning them as future advocates for animals.
- TVNR Programs for Community Cats: We implement Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return models to humanely manage feral populations while reducing shelter intake—especially in towns like Wymore and Blue Springs.
- Volunteerism and Community Engagement: BHS mobilizes local residents as volunteers and ambassadors through events like Dog Days of Summer and public education sessions, building a shared sense of stewardship.
- Strategic Partnerships & Grant Acquisition: We work closely with municipalities, public health officials, and foundations to secure funding that supports our no-kill mission and expands outreach capacity.
- Digital Outreach & Lost Pet Recovery: Our social media strategy and shelter software enable rapid pet reunification and community engagement, helping lost animals get home faster and reducing length of stay.
- Adoption Without Expiration: Every animal has a home waiting—we offer behavior support, vet care, and time to ensure each placement is successful and permanent, regardless of how long it takes.
