STAND T.A.L.L. - Thank A Local Lawman
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
STAND T.A.L.L. raises funds for the unbudgeted needs of law enforcement including the K-9 Corp, department education, and equipment to allow them to do their jobs in a safe and more effective way. Working with the Criminal Justice Department of Blue Ridge Community College, we fund tuition and equipment needs for students taking the Basic Law Enforcement Training program required to become a sworn officer in North Carolina. These are stressful times for law enforcement, and our strategic plan has been expanded to include funding for Mental Health and Peer Support, Post Critical Incident Seminars programs and initiatives for law enforcement and other first responders. These are experiential workshops for first responders who have experienced a critical incident. We seek funding to provide peer support training, critical incident stress management and post critical incident stress training for law enforcement personnel and their spouses.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Stand T.A.L.L. - Thank A Local Lawman
Encouraging local citizens to show their support and appreciation for law enforcement during their daily lives, and not wait for an event or tragedy to recognize the value of the job that law enforcement does.
We'll provide funding for teaching children about the duties of law enforcement and encourage respect for authority, especially among segments of our population that may have a negative view or image of the job, duties and value of law enforcement.
We're providing funding to departments for necessary items that may not be available under their current budgets that will offer enhanced training and support equipment to better do their jobs such as bulletproof vests for both officers & K-9 dogs. One of our most important programs is our support of Peer Support and Mental Health services, counseling and training for law enforcement.
We also provide financial assistance in the form of grants to college age students pursuing careers in criminal justice and law enforcement.
Skills Maintenance & Protective Gear
We raise funds for unbudgeted items such as replacement foul weather gear for the motorcycle divisions, outer protective vests for the officers and bulletproof vests for the K-9 corps that work in pursuit and drug interdiction with their handlers. These funds are not available in current budgets.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We plan to raise the awareness of the community about the budget shortfalls and needs of some of our local law enforcement departments and personnel. We are now funding Peer Support & Mental Health programs for law enforcement and other first responders. Our goal is to reduce stress, drug & alcohol abuse, relationship challenges and most impotantly suicides due to PTSD and other job related stresses.
We will encourage people to become responsible and civic minded and to become involved in their communities particularly as it regards dealing with law enforcement. We strive to help the community recognize the dangeous job these professionals perform and to simply take the time to show their appreciation.
We ask people of all ages to take a moment when they encounter anyone from law enforcement to say THANK YOU for the difficult job they do daily.
Educating children and reminding their parents that the police are the first line of defense against some very real threats that come up in our daily lives.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Working with the chiefs of our local police departments and the County Sheriff we asl them to inform us of their unfunded needs for equipment and services, and raise funds to provide those that are not being funded in their current budgets.
We have found that there's a need to provide the members of local communities with information and opportunities to learn more about what the city and county law enforcement personnel do.
In addition, we're working with the local departments to encourage neighborhoods to work together to provide eyes and ears within their respective areas and be responsive to anything that seems out of place - a see something say something attitude to be instilled in residents.
We plan to generate interest and participation in the teaching of respect for law enforcement starting with younger people and involving their parents and other adults in the idea that making the "COPS" feel appreciated is just one simple thing that everyone can participate in doing that cost nothing and means a great deal to those who serve and protect us.
We have expanded our reach to include five counties in western North Carolina, and are working to expand into other cities and hope to establish Upstate relationships into South Carolina in the next year.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The Stand T.A.L.L. - Thank A Local Lawman has among its leadership former military personnel, people who are closely associated with area law enforcement personnel, and citizens who want to be sure that the message of respect and appreciation is evident and apparent to all of those who serve wearing the "blue" uniform or badge of law enforcement.
The founder of this local movement is well-versed in issues and training for taking personal responsibility as well as personal and home protection. He has attended specialized training to learn the inner workings of the county sheriff's department, is a certified instructor for his state's Concealed Carry Permit training, is a Vietnam veteran, a member of Sheep Dog Impact Assistance and is involved in local commitees and boards as an active volunteer in his community.
The people that have volunteered to become involved with Stand T.A.L.L. are also strong believers in the work of local law enforcement. They know that we citizens can be a valuable extension as observers and reporters of situations that just don't seem to be right by being situationally aware of our surroundings and within our neighborhoods.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
