STEM Expo, Inc.
An innovative alternative to the traditional science fair
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
The youth of our country have limited interest in learning about and pursuing careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) in large part because those fields seem institutionalized and boring. Teachers, Students, and Parents alike all dread the typical expression of those fields: the classic science fair. Additionally, the classic science fair only recognizes one specific type of activity, the traditional "science project". The celebration of non-standard STEM activities and learning processes is missing from many educational environments.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We provide an innovative alternative the the typical science fair. We want to celebrate non-standard STEM accomplishments and support students in their endeavors to create new ideas.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
First, and foremost, we provide a free venue for celebrating the exploration of non-standard STEM ideas, thoughts, and directions. We offer an innovative alternative to the traditional science fair. The aspect of having a fair which offers students a location to show off their work is valid, but we believe that there is more out there than a standard Scientific Inquiry. Our events feature seven categories for entry - depending on the location, these categories include only one, two, or three of the standard science fair fields. The other fields can include such items as Invention, Reverse Engineering, Robotics, Science Fiction, Wearable Design, Coding/Computer Science, Agricultural Innovation. We also provide all of the resources that we have created, free of charge, to any other organization that would like to use them, with a Creative Commons share type license. Secondarily, we will support students and teachers in the pursuit of these non-standard types of projects.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We have annually held successful events since 2011. As the organization has grown, our capabilities have grown as well. We started off providing a one-day event with 65 student entries and several vendor presentations, and have expanded to become the model for the next generation science fair. We have multiple vendors, local STEM based companies and organizations (for-profit and non-profit alike) offer interactive exhibits for the public and our student attendees. Students get to meet and talk with STEM professionals, both on a one-on-one basis as part of the judging process, and at the exhibitor area.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
As of the end of 2017, we have directly held 7 annual STEM Expo events in Placer County California, in 2018 we are adding events to cover more counties in the state. Additionally, there are numerous events that are based on our model (see the website for a current list). We provide all material and resources to others at no charge, only requiring recognition of the source.
