MAMMOTH LAKES RECREATION
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
With funding and support for federal agencies such as the National Park Service and the U.S. Forest Service shrinking, our public lands and recreational resources are falling into disrepair. This lack of support not only affects the experiential quality of our recreational resources, it directly impacts the economic livelihood and safety of mountain communities, such as Mammoth Lakes.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Community Recreation Center
Mammoth Lakes Recreation is working with the Town of Mammoth Lakes to manage a capital campaign to fund the construction of a new community recreation center. This facility will be one of the primary hubs for both summer and winter recreation, housing seasonal amenities such as an ice rink, sport courts, and community meeting space.
Mammoth Lakes Trails System
Maintenance and programming to keep the local trails system a world-class and unique experience for hikers, bikers, and winter experiences including snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snow-play and others.
Adopt-A-Trail
Mammoth Lakes Recreation oversees the Adopt-A-Trail program for the town of Mammoth Lakes and surrounding area. This program helps fund the materials and manpower necessary to maintain trails in the Mammoth Lakes Trail System and other soft-surface trails.
Measure U Allocations
Mammoth Lakes Recreation works with the Town of Mammoth Lakes to administer the Measure U allocations program. This program helps fund a variety of sustainable recreation, arts and cultural programs through the allocation of monies derived from a local utility tax (Measure U)
Tangle Free Waters
Mammoth Lakes Recreation's Tangle Free Waters program seeks to keep fishing line from infiltrating our local lakes, rivers, creeks and streams. Mammoth Lakes Recreation works with local volunteers to maintain a network of collection stations where fishing enthusiasts can safely deposit used or unwanted monofilament line.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
To become the best alpine recreation community in the country, through the development and programming trails, parks, mobility, arts & culture.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Mammoth Lakes Recreation operates as a de facto community foundation whose area of focus remains squarely fixed on supporting and amplifying the efforts of those organizations working to increase or enhance recreation, art and cultural opportunities within the Town of Mammoth Lakes and surrounding area. Our principal areas of work are 1) capital projects, 2) advocacy and 3) entrepreneurship.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Mammoth Lakes Recreation focuses its work in three distinct buckets: Capital Projects, Advocacy and Entrepreneurism.
Our capital projects include efforts to build a multi-use facility, which will house an Olympic-sized ice rink, summertime Rec Zone, an inclusive playground, an outdoor play area, and a 2,500' community center.
Mammoth Lakes Recreation is also actively advocating for and working to secure a myriad of public trail projects on USFS land, as well as enhancing mobility throughout the Town of Mammoth Lakes.
Finally Mammoth Lakes Recreation is working to foster recreation, arts and cultural opportunities through the allocation of municipal funds, along with the development of unique community engagement opportunities.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Over the last three years, Mammoth Lakes Recreation has supported the creation of over three miles of net-new recreation trail, and allocated over $300,000 in funding for recreation, arts and cultural projects and programs.
In 2018, Mammoth Lakes Recreation successfully raised $75,000 to help fund a new inclusive playground in Mammoth Lakes.
In 2019, Mammoth Lakes Recreation successfully fundraised to rebuild a footbridge on the Horseshoe Lake Trail. Mammoth Lakes Recreation also worked with our partners at the Town of Mammoth Lakes and Inyo National Forest to design and install a new disc golf course that will be open to the public in 2020.
In 2020, Mammoth Lakes Recreation will be launching two new programs; Adopt-A-Trail and Tangle Free Waters. These programs are designed to help maintain the environmental integrity and natural landscape that surrounds our community.
