What we aim to solve
Aspergers101's mission includes providing optimum support and expanding opportunities for lifelong growth and fulfillment. Part of the opportunity for fulfillment is becoming independent. The number one reason people diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome do not drive is fear of communication challenge with law enforcement should they be pulled over. This problem has and is being addressed by Aspergers101 by way of policy changes with Texas DPS, DMV and and State of Texas. During the 2017 Texas Legislature, HB #1434 was launched and passed allowing "Communication Impediment with a Peace Officer" on Texas DL or State ID and corresponding marketing materials to be placed in DPs offices across Texas. This passage is historical and Aspergers101 launched a state-wide TV & Radio PSA campaign alerting citizens of the new code. With the support of the Texas Governor's committee on People with Disabilities, Aspergers101 is introducing a new bill to the 2019 Legislative session furthering the cause.

Driving with Autism and other Communication Impediments
This trail-blazing initiative is allowing Texas to lead the country in innovations to improve the interactions between law enforcement and people with disabilities while providing support for drivers wanting to expand their independence by driving. Because of the collaborative work of Aspergers101 and the Texas DPS, the following 3 initiatives were announced on April 25th, 2016 at a Press Conference from our State Capitol. 1) New Drivers License Restriction Code: Communication Impediment with a Peace Officer 2) State-wide law enforcement training on Autism, Aspergers and other disabilities within the Communication Impediment restriction code. This will be accomplished through live training that Aspergers101 is conducting with new Texas DPS Trooper Recruits and through video training modules produced in conjunction with Texas DPS and the Texas Governors Committee on People with Disabilities. 3) Aspergers101 teamed up with Texas DPS Training Facility in Florence Texas to produce a template for a day-long "Driving with Autism” Camp.
