Communities lack cohesion and involvement by the population in large degree. Loving Community seeks to invest in the community by inspiring people to volunteer and invest time in their community under the auspices of the Good Neighbor principle.

Loving Legacy - Arbor House Memory Care Center

Arbor House Lewisville is an all-inclusive, secure community for residents with memory care needs. We have created an environment to support residents to maintain their dignity and independence while receiving assistance in areas they may need support, such as dressing, bathing, medications and decision making. Our Life in Motion engagement programming allows residents to find joy, purpose and connection in their everyday lives. Our caregivers, as we call "friends", find a distinct connection with each resident that helps build relationships between the two, providing continuity and structure throughout the day. Whether it be enjoying snacks in the ice cream parlor, or helping bake a cake, enjoying the birds in the Aviary, or taking a walk in the secured courtyard, the residents of Arbor House are engaged with their "friends" and enjoy a more purpose-filled day!

Operation Success had its origins in the fall of 2014. It was envisioned by Principal Brian McCoo, along with the Durham Middle School math faculty. The primary goal was pretty simple. To help students have a better understanding and achievement in math!

Key to this mentoring program was the hope to engage community volunteers, including high school students . With these volunteers it would allow for an environment of small groups and one-on-one conversations centering around the math assignments and concepts that students were engaged in during their regular class room work during the week.

The Durham math faculty oversees what has become a highly successful program. They prepare the week’s learning goals for the students and then give the volunteers a guide for helping.

Boys2Men is a monthly lunchtime mentoring group where boys will be matched with a male mentor. The group will utilize the book Operation: Breaking the Boy Code by Dr. Poppy Moon. Below is a review of a group currently using this group approach:

"I am an elementary school counselor. I am presently using this with a group of 4th and 5th grade boys who are seen frequently for behavior and personal problems. They are loving the activities and really grasping the concept of what it means to be a man of good character. The activities also bring on great conversations where the boys freely share their feelings. They especially love the concept of creating their own "secret society" and creating a secret handshake. I would highly recommend!"

Reading is FUNdamental to a great education. For lots of varied reasons many students need some help in reading. Often times it's just the opportunity to read with an adult.

The Rockbrook Reading Initiative provides for this need. By spending an hour a week in a classroom with students from Pre-K to 2nd grade this gives them an opportunity to practice their reading skills. The time spent may be in a reading group, one on one, or reading comprehension.

Training and supervision are provided so virtually anyone can do this role. Days and hours are flexible.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

To bring a better quality of life in our zip code. This will be done by increasing the idea of being good neighbors From this platform of good will, relationships are then formed with the goal of giving back undeserving the community.

We have six key objectives for Loving Community to accomplish our mission:

OBJECTIVE 1: Increase Progress & Awareness of Loving Community's Neighborhood Model
OBJECTIVE 2: Improve Coordination, Collaboration & Partnerships Within Community
OBJECTIVE 3: Develop & Implement a Multi-Family Housing Strategy
OBJECTIVE 4: Expand & Grow School Based Mentoring Programs
OBJECTIVE 5: Increase Key Resources for Sustainability & Growth
OBJECTIVE 6: Live as Practitioners & Deepen Neighborhood Relationships

Our organization is young with lots of opportunity for increasing both in financial and human resources. We are creating a leadership structure that will allow key volunteers to champion the six strategies.

We have accomplished many key milestones in our first 18-months:

Being granted 501c3 status
Expanded our advisory team
Establishing key partnerships with community organizations
Introducing new programs for community volunteer sites
Over 3000 volunteer hours

We have not achieved our financial goals as we would like.
