Mission

High-quality maternal and infant care should be accessible to all women and babies, as should a support system allowing them to thrive. In honor of Jennifer Lawson, a loving mother of three, who tragically lost her life in 2014, the Jennifer Bush-Lawson Foundation serves economically vulnerable mothers and infants by working to increase access to maternal and pediatric health care and support.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Telemedicine Pilot Project

Funding for nursing and care coordination staffing for a telemedicine pilot program at Virginia Hospital Center's Outpatient Clinic. The program, which launched in 2017, allows for increased prenatal monitoring for high-risk pregnancies through virtual appointments for patients who may otherwise may not be able to make in-person appointments due to work schedules, child care needs or transportation issues. The program seeks to reduce NICU admissions, missed and no-show prenatal appointments, and emergency department visits and hospitalizations (other than for delivery) for economically vulnerable OB patients in the Clinic.

The Jennifer Bush-Lawson Foundation launched the Prize to uncover and support forward-thinking solutions that have the potential to improve access to prenatal care for disadvantaged women in the greater Washington, DC region. This inaugural award will support a citywide research project in Washington, DC, led by Children's National to develop and implement strategies that reduce obstacles to screening for stress, depression, and anxiety in pregnancy and to provide necessary follow-up resources tailored for low-income black perinatal women.

The Jennifer Bush-Lawson Foundation, in partnership with health professionals and leading health organizations, convenes events on topics including maternal mortality and race, bias and equity in prenatal care in order to generate ideas that can lead to action-based solutions.

In the midst of the global pandemic, we launched a project that will allow us to support new families as they bring babies home under unprecedented circumstances. The Baby Bundle program provides essential newborn supplies to support needed essentials, safe sleep and healthy breastfeeding.
