What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Music is often seen as a passively consumable commodity, rather than the active social & cultural activity that it once was. We aim to promote the idea that anyone can make music.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Ukulele Jams

Up to 5 times a month, we host a free ukulele jam session where players of all abilities can come together and make music.

Adults

The Allegheny Ukulele Soirée is Pennsylvania's longest running Ukulele festival, located in central Pennsylvania in the foothills of the Alleghenies. Dedicated to sharing the ukulele with both the local and ukulele communities, the Soirée blends practical workshops with cultural exploration.

Each year we bring top talent from the Ukulele World to our festival, right here in Altoona, PA. We pride ourselves on providing an intense and immersive experience to all of our festival attendees.

Population(s) Served
Adults

The Allegheny Ukes periodically conducts ukulele workshops for the public. Workshops are promoted on ours and others' calendars. Workshops usually have a nominal fee to cover materials, space rental, etc.

The Allegheny Ukulele Kollective has teamed up with local and regional libraries to provide an opportunity to bring music home! Beginning in the fall of 2015, libraries were given ukulele kits to be added to each library's collection. These kits can be checked out by library patrons with a valid library card!

Beginning in 2019, our program morphed into a fund-matching program. Each successful applicant will raise funds towards ukulele kits (approximately a $75 value) and our organization will match it dollar-for-dollar (except for shipping) through our partner, Ohana Music. If you are interested in joining our program, please send an email to [email protected]

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

We want to increase music literacy and knowledge among adults & children.

We hold an annual music festival, the Allegheny Ukulele Soirée to drive adult education in our region. We also hold periodic low-cost beginner workshops to introduce new and beginning players to the ukulele - driving skills and music theory all the way.

We are fortunate to have several professional musicians and music educators in our organization who lead many workshops and advise us on how to best reach new players.

We have been able to establish and grow an annual music festival, the Allegheny Ukulele Soirée, where 30+ workshops are taught by nationally recognized ukulele teachers. In addition, we have established 5 ukulele jams/circles each month where between 5-20 people get together to play music together and to learn from each other. We have also been able to help put over 100 ukuleles into schools and libraries across the state of Pennsylvania since 2015.
