Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Summer Immersion Courses
ARC's month-long Summer Immersion Courses integrate wilderness expeditions and academic basecamps. These courses facilitate the development of essential leadership and academic skills in alternative classroom settings and on outdoor adventures. Rigorous activities require physical and mental commitment and interpersonal collaboration, while building an ethos for healthy lifestyles, personal empowerment, and environmental stewardship. Challenging leadership and life-skills training focuses on self-management, goal setting, personal responsibility, teamwork, communication, and resilience. Literacy sessions develop skills in critical thinking, reading comprehension, writing, and public speaking.
Community Leadership Program
The Community Leadership Program is a two-year progression for high school youth and is offered in three California high schools (North Tahoe, Firebaugh, and Dos Palos). The Leadership Program includes over 60 hours of in-school leadership workshops, multiple outdoor weekend adventure trips, ARC's month-long immersive summer course, and a college scholarship upon graduation. The Community Leadership Program develops high school readiness, builds leadership skills and self-confidence, and empowers a community of young environmental stewards.
Mentoring and Community-Based Programs
ARC Mentoring and Community-based Programs provide one-to-one relationships with participants throughout their high school careers and beyond; accountability and guidance regarding academics; college access and financial aid support; and attention to personal issues. The staff offers referrals to a wide network of resources that benefit participants and their families. To create ownership, buy-in, commitment and follow-through, participants co-design their individual mentoring to meet their unique needs and account for their specific goals. Additionally, ARC offers leadership development, training, and employment opportunities to alumni and relevant young people, and each opportunity is tailored to the unique needs and goals of the individual.

- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
- We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
