Programs and results
What we aim to solve
We don't do promotions and have limited fundraising activities. TYNI is volunteer-only, and we rely solely on public donations to run our website, newsletter, and WhatsApp groups. It is important to note that purchases of the app are NOT donations, and goes only for upkeep, security, updates, and maintenance of the app program itself. During the heart of the chodosh season, our Executive Director works on TYNI full-time, 6 days a week for at least 14 hours a day with no compensation at all. TYNI did away with all phone answering services, as it was too time consuming. We still offer texts, chats, email, and the WhatApp Groups, so there are plenty of alternatives for people to reach TYNI.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Yoshon.com Website
The main focus of our work is our website Yoshon.com featuring a searchable database enabling Orthodox Jews to find current information on kosher grain products and their Yoshon status. It also offers many educational articles on how to keep yoshon, and instructions and tools to help figure out date codes. There are currently almost 2,400 product entries on our site to date.
Yoshon.com App
Our Official Yoshon.com Mobile App was released in April 2022, and is available on the App Store and Google Play. Connecting directly to Yoshon.com, the app acts as a safe, secure and kosher browser.
This continues our mission of helping people easily find out the information they need on products that are listed in our site's database.
The App works in the same way as the Yoshon.com website, but it features a lightning-fast scanner. When a product's UPC barcode is scanned, if we have information on that product, it connects instantly to our site when a product's UPC barcode is scanned. Currently, there are nearly 9,000 UPC Bar Code numbers stored on our site.
We recently included a User's Guide on our site available for download on the App page.
As of the end of 2023, there were 1,120 active apps installed.
Yoshon.com Newsletter and Alerts
In March 2019, we started a newsletter subscription service that reports current news in the yoshon world. We send out yoshon alerts on affected products or establishments. Once a month, we have a newsletter that recaps all of the previous month's news, and adds any new news that has not yet been reported.
There are currently 487 subscribers as of this update on 1/19/24.
Yoshon.com What'sApp Groups
Our first Yoshon.com WhatsApp Group was started in July 2019 and has been extremely successful. When Groups 1, 2, and 3 reached capacity, Group 4 was started.
All groups get current news updates, and members have access to the Admins for questions on yoshon products throughout the day. Most members are from the USA, but other members reside in Canada, Israel, the UK, Netherlands, Brazil, India, and Mexico.
When a rash of spam bombs were sent to many Jewish WA Groups in September 2021, we implemented a safety feature called the WAPBot (WhatsApp Police Bot), a mandatory security signup process to keep the Groups safe from spam and other unsavory posts. This security measure has been extremely effective.
Between the four groups, there are currently 1,177 WhatsApp group members as of this update 1/19/23.
Video and Audio Shiurim and Tools
In February 2020, a videos page was created, then later in January 2021 an audios page was created. These feature shiurim and learning opportunities on the subject of yoshon from well-known rabbis and certification agencies.
We still hope to eventually add some of our own - "Yoshon.com Video TidBits", that will be short videos from 1-5 minutes explaining different aspects of keeping yoshon. We hope to incorporate some date code aids on our website in the future.
In October 2023, we introduced our Tools page, that has some helpful tools for calculating date codes with our Julian to Gregorian Date Converter. This page will hopefully be expanded as time goes on to include even more online tools.
YAIR
Due to our limited staff and the abundance of questions we get, TYNI implemented a chat bot "Yoshon Artificial Intelligence Robot" (YAIR) in July 2020. It helps address many questions that are erroneously asked, saving time and resources. It also directs visitors to the places where they can get the information they need on their questions. It works harmoniously with our online yoshon database.
The TYNI Product Manual
The "TYNI Product Manual" was created in cooperation with Association of Kashrus Organizations (AKO) in which TYNI is a Media Member.
The TYNI Product Manual, debuted in December 2023, is an interactive pdf document, listing the status and date codes of most of the products found on the Yoshon.com website.
As one may expect from TYNI, the document is searchable, has hyperlinks throughout for easy navigation, and can also be downloaded and printed. It also contains the specialized Yoshon.com lists for current yoshon cereals, flours, beers, and hechsherim.
The TYNI Manual is updated regularly every few days, as Yoshon.com gets updated, so it is always current when viewed online.
There are future plans for AKO to print and distribute the "TYNI Product Manual" to various physical locations in the upcoming 5784-5785 chodosh season, for those who do not access the internet.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our goal is to be able to remain self-sufficient in meeting the expenses of our organization by means of public donations alone. B"H, so far we have so far been able to this without having to resort to membership fees or other forms of extra fund-raising, not counting the app fundraiser. It was voted on by the Board that the Yoshon.com App would need to have a small access fee when people sign up for it to enable it to remain secure and have regular updates for the safety of all users.
We have already accomplished our goal of bringing as much easily-accessible information to the yoshon-keeping public as possible and will continue to do so.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The addition of YAIR was a large help, and we did away with any phone answering services, yet still allow texting. This also helped to save some time.
We now have additional Admins on our four WhatsApp groups, and thank them for their continued help in answering the questions of the yoshon-keeping public.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our website is top-ranking and reaches thousands of people. Our newsletter reaches hundreds of people as well, and all email addresses are kept totally private, as we never make them available to third-parties.
We have over 1,000 WhatsApp Group members, and between all of these, we should be able to meet most if not all of our goals.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We have accomplished being self -sufficient, meeting our visitor's needs, and educating Jews on everything yoshon. We have also been quite successful in addressing people's questions in a prompt manner. YAIR also has been a big help with fielding questions to where people can lean what they want to know.
