What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Welcome Home Program
We provide newly housed individuals and families with beds, bedding, and essential hygiene and cleaning supplies to help them stabilize in their new housing. Without our services, people are sleeping on the floor until they can afford a mattress. Sleeping on the floor is bad for overall health, especially for elderly people, and bad for sleep health. Not only are beds important for basic dignity but chronic sleep insufficiency contributes to the development of cardiovascular disease and other related metabolic conditions, including obesity and type 2 diabetes, all of which contribute to early mortality for formerly homeless people. When we provide people with beds and basic supplies for running a household, they can focus on the big things like getting a job, benefits, or the care they need to stay housed and work towards self-sufficiency. These services don’t just help people as they move into housing, changing a life lasts a lifetime.
Vital Records
Our Vital Docs Program helps people break the cycle of poverty and homelessness. When we help people get a birth certificate, they have increased access to economic safety net programs (like CalFresh and Housing Vouchers) that promote not only economic stability but physical health as well. Living unsheltered is associated with chronic sleep deprivation which contributes to a host of serious health conditions including adverse effects on mental health and memory, which can severely impact a person’s housing stability and job prospects. Obtaining vital documents gets our participants off the street sooner or helps them avoid homelessness altogether.

- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
