Konojel Community Center
Konojel is a registered non-profit organization based in San Marcos La Laguna, Guatemala. Their mission is to reduce chronic malnutrition and endemic poverty among the indigenous Mayan community in rural Guatemala by providing programs through which at-risk individuals can raise their standard of living. Konojel operates several effective programs:
• Nutrition. Konojel provides nutritious daily meals to children and older persons whose consists primarily of tortillas and who suffer from chronic malnutrition.
• Educational Enrichment. After serving a nutritious lunch to elementary students, Konojel provides supplemental education through games and other learning techniques.
• Computer Center. Konojel provides computer and internet access for the entire indigenous community, allowing many students to complete homework assignments they otherwise would have to pay for.
• Comedor Konojel. Konojel also operates a small restaurant which provides training and work opportunities to local women and yields profits to support Konojel’s other programs.
• Women’s Cooperative. With a local partner, Konojel supports a women’s cooperative of micro-businesses who produce a variety of products for sale, from woven textiles to solar-baked cookies.
Konojel is highly acclaimed and valued for its contributions to the San Marcos community.
