What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Our VISION is a just world where all men and women determine the course of their lives in dignity and security, using environmental resources in a sustainable manner. Working with our partners, we support the efforts of disadvantaged people and communities in developing countries to determine the course of their own lives, thereby helping them to help themselves. We promote fair access to essential resources and protect social, economic, political, environmental, and cultural rights. In the USA, we are building relationships and connecting the dots across the Atlantic and worldwide for Helvetas country programs and partners.

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene

Why water and sanitation matter
Access to water and sanitation is a human right. The UN Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development recognizes water as the key to sustainable development. Access to safe water, basic sanitation, and good hygiene practices means an opportunity for improved education, health, and economic development. Improving water resources management is the key to climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, sustainable agriculture, and preventing conflicts.

What we do
Helvetas, together with its local partners, strengthens local governments in making water supply, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services available for all. We help create spaces where local governments, civil society, and the private sector coordinate their actions to improve services for the most disadvantaged people - and to do so in an effective and accountable way.

We analyze and seek to understand key behavior change determinants such as social norms. Our interventions to improve water quality, handwashing, and latrine use build on this understanding.

We join hands with our sustainable agriculture and climate change colleagues to find water security solutions. Systematic stakeholder dialogues help us contribute to a fair and equitable distribution of water resources.

We strengthen the capacity of key local actors in developing national strategies, improving governance, and creating innovations.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS AND HUMANITARIAN AID
Helvetas provides support. We enable people to change their own lives and the life of their community. Our approach is to build local capacities to manage all aspects of projects – from planning to implementation to evaluation. In emergency situations, we provide humanitarian assistance on the ground as well as supporting sustainable reconstruction efforts.
CONSULTING
Helvetas provides effective assistance. Our experts advise and support private, state, multilateral and civil society organizations – providing professional expertise, skills training, and sharing experiences more widely through international networks
DEVELOPMENT POLICY
Helvetas takes a stand. Through petitions and campaigns, we seek to influence development
policies, whether in Switzerland as a supporting organization in Alliance Sud, and internationally as a member of Alliance 2015, InterAction, and the Millennium Water Alliance.

WATER, FOOD and CLIMATE – Ensuring Basic Rights
In partnership with public and private actors, Helvetas enables people to gain sustainable access to natural resources, safe water, sanitation and hygiene, to nutritious and healthy food, and to technical and financial support services for improved and climate-resilient living conditions in rural and urban areas.
VOICE, INCLUSION and COHESION – Strengthening Good Governance
In partnership with public and private actors, Helvetas amplifies the voices of local communities and enhances the space for civil society and private sector actors to meaningfully participate in decision-making processes while developing capacities of public institutions to deliver socially inclusive and gender-responsive services, and articulate transformative policies that reduce inequalities, enhance social cohesion, promote human rights and promote safe and productive migration.
SKILLS, JOBS and INCOME – Creating New Perspectives
In partnership with public and private actors, Helvetas promotes basic education, skills development and private sector development as well as financial inclusion to create gainful employment and income opportunities for the poor. To access and develop such opportunities, our partners are supported in enabling disadvantaged youth to acquire basic, vocational and life skills for a life in dignity

Helvetas, an international network of independent affiliate member organizations, is working in the fields of development cooperation and emergency response. We promote the fundamental rights of individuals and groups and strengthen governments and other duty bearers in their service provision, building upon more than six decades of development experience. With more than 1,500 collaborators in about 30 countries, of whom more than 1,300 are national staff, the network members share a common vision and mission and subscribe to common working principles and policies. We jointly implement development programs and adhere to a common strategy, working approaches and thematic areas of intervention. In the USA, Helvetas is structured as a 501(c)(3) with its own Board of Directors.

In 2019, Helvetas reached 3,880,202 people to have a better life. Specific results include:
238,402 people attended courses at which they learned about their civil rights and/or democracy, decentralized administration, migration and peace-building.
689,259 people have improved access to schools, hospitals and markets thanks to construction of bridges and roads.
1,238,386 people benefited from sustainable and water-efficient agriculture, biodiversity, better commercialization of their farm products or balanced nutrition.
420,005 people improved their capacities to adapt to climate change, learned to reduce and manage disaster risks and have assured access to natural resources.
568,779 people completed vocational training or attended primary school or a literacy course.
453,111 people gained access to clean drinking water and sanitary installations
272,260 people could count on emergency aid as refugees or after a natural disaster
