We Reward Workhorse Scholars

Maplewood, MN   |  http://ericksonmerkel.org/

Mission

The Erickson Merkel Foundation awards scholarships to students with the heart and drive to realize their dreams. We aim to select and reward scholarship candidates who exemplify the values of hard work, creativity, and service. Not just students who earn a high GPA, but the sort students who are putting themselves through school by working tenaciously. We want to reward workhorse scholars who are doing what is necessary to achieve their goals, all while avoiding burdensome and economically damaging student loan debt.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

A competitive workforce is essential to a strong and well-functioning economy, and our students have long understood how technical and intellectual pursuits may provide advantages in the workplace. However, today's environment of higher education is often one of extreme economic pressure. Soaring student loan debt is gravely impacting the U.S. and global economy. With student loan debt rapidly increasing, it's important for students to understand the lasting negative effects that large amounts of debt can have on an individual and the economy more generally.

Legacy Scholarships

Through our legacy scholarships, we seek to offer financial support in the form of academic scholarship awards to high-achieving students who have the determination to take control of their academic, professional, and financial futures. Current scholarships include the Jerome P. Merkel Scholarship, Donald Erickson Scholarship, Susan McGuire Scholarship, Duane Reznechek Scholarship, and the Henry & Patricia Belisle Determination Scholarship. Award recipients demonstrate the values of hard work, creativity, and are putting themselves through school by working tenaciously. We are seeking individuals who are doing everything possible to achieve their personal, educational, and professional goals while avoiding student loan debt.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The Erickson Merkel Foundation was founded with one purpose in mind: To award scholarships to those students who are rolling up their sleeves at work and hitting the books at schools; who are absolute workhorses about chasing down their future; and who are positively impacting their communities. We believe higher education is important, and we seek to reward those who are successfully juggling work, academics, and personal finances.

Through the efforts of unpaid volunteers, the Erickson Merkel Foundation manages the scholarship application review, candidate selection and award payout processes. Thus, all contributions to the foundation are applied directly, and in full, to scholarship funds that are used to reward workhorse scholars.

In addition to raising funds to pay out annual scholarship awards, the Erickson Merkel Foundation is working to grow a sustainable endowment fund that can be used to award scholarship dollars for many years to come.

Our board of directors is made up of a diverse group of people with a multitude of experience in the public and private sectors and across all industries. Board members understand the challenges facing today's students and place similar weight in acquiring quality education with and through strong work ethic. Our directors play an active role in the foundation, not just through the scholarship candidate selection process, but also in annual fundraising activities. We offer full support to our directors, with intentions to promote the mission and vision of the organization as a team.

To date, the Erickson Merkel Foundation has paid out $23,500 in scholarship dollars to very well-deserving workhorse scholars. We also have built an endowment fund of over $13,000 to help sustain the organization in the future.

In 2019, we plan to pay out another $7,500 to scholarship recipients. Funds raised in excess of our scholarship payments will be used to grow the Foundations endowment fund.
