Programs and results
What we aim to solve
The focused need R3 seeks to address is black youth labor force (16 – 24 years old) participation rates in East St. Louis. The economic effects of joblessness as a youth drastically affect the economic potential of such youth as they grow into adulthood. R3 recognizes youth employment as a strong need. If we employ youth in East St. Louis now, they will have better economic outcomes in the first few years after graduating high school. A Pew Charitable Trusts report supports this claim in writing, “for every year people work in their teens, their income rises 14 to 16 percent in their 20s” (2009). Elizabeth Jacob also writes, “A growing academic literature on the “scarring” effects of launching a career without a job suggests that young people who endure early spells of unemployment are likely to have lower wages and greater odds of future unemployment than those who don’t” (Brookings Institution, 2014).
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Youth Workforce Readiness Program
As a result of participating in R3 Development, youth will learn job readiness skills that enable them to participate in the youth labor force during the short and long term. They will be able to put into practice their job readiness skills derived from volunteering and internship training to qualify for paid R3 internships. Once in the internship, interns take on new levels of responsibility as they will be paid, and they will reinforce their job readiness skills through real-world application. They will also participate in professional development classes, which will equip them with more job skills and a biblical worldview of work. Before, during and after school sessions will provide further opportunities to maintain and build job readiness skills. Ultimately, their experience with R3 will result in reduced instances of long-term unemployment between 18 and 26 years old.
