Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Today's Construction Industry is facing a precarious shortage of trained workers. Each day that goes buy brings one more project that needs trained personnel.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Camp NAWIC
The San Diego Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction is partnering for the 10th year with Kearny High School’s EID to offer high school girls an opportunity to learn in a hands-on FREE summer day camp the basic skills of carpentry, masonry, electrical, plumbing, sheet metal, heavy equipment and surveying. Here is the link to the 2016 video:

This camp is designed to challenge the students to discover the many opportunities available in the exciting and rewarding field of construction. Girls will learn valuable life, teamwork and trade skills. Instructors and camp mentors include men and women employed in the industry.
NAWIC San Diego Scholarships
NAWIC San Diego Chapter #21, in an effort to promote excellence and the education Offering scholarships to candidates pursuing a career that falls within the criteria of the NAWIC SD Scholarship Fund.
Block Kids
Block Kids Building Program is a national building program/competition that is sponsored on the local level by NAWIC Chapters and other organizations. The Block Kids program introduces children in grades 1-6 to the Construction industry, and promotes an interest in future construction related careers. The competition involves the construction of various structures with interlocking blocks and three of the following additional items: a small rock, string, foil, and poster board.
Local winners advance to Regional competition, and one semi-finalist from each region is entered in the National Program competition. National prizes are awarded to the top three projects.
Design Drafting
The Design Drafting Competition is a contest designed to provide recognition to high school students for creative design, successful problem solving and craftsmanship in preparing architectural drawings. Objectives of the contest are to introduce the student to the construction industry in a positive and challenging manner, while fostering a sense of self-worth and building confidence. Entries are evaluated for detail, accuracy and originality of work. Local winners move on to regional and national competition with prizes awarded at each level.

Goals & Strategy
Learn about the organization's key goals, strategies, capabilities, and progress.
Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our programs reach out to children and young adults to pique interest in a career in the industry. Our hands on approach in Camp NAWIC gives the opportunity to touch and feel as well as learn from trained professionals from the industry. Block Kids lets them know at an early age that the industry exists.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our strategy is to offer programs that attract youth K-12 that introduce and encourage them to pursue a career in the construction industry.
To work for broader community outreach and partner relationships, leading to more young people engaging in expanded programming with the support of a growing number of committed volunteers and construction industry leaders. We also work to influence our educational systems, students, and parents to place more emphasis on, and resources toward, vocational education that connects directly to construction industry jobs.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We are capable of meeting our goals because we have the support of the industry and the tools to reach out and educate young people about the construction industry.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We have accomplished introducing several hundred of students to the industry with a handful at this point actually pursuing a career in the industry. Of course many of these students are in K-6 so it will be some time yet to see how successful we were at that level.
