What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Our goal is to meet the undermet and more often unmet need for basic non-food goods, and to alleviate the shame, desperation, and increased chance of illness and disease which often accompany Hygiene Poverty. Goods such as shampoo, deodorant, body wash, baby wash/shampoo, dishwashing detergent, multi-purpose cleaner and laundry detergent. “Uninsured. Food insecure. Unhoused. These are the names given to the untenable conditions that arise from poverty—some of them, at least. There is still no common language to describe the condition of being unable to afford diapers, toothpaste, laundry detergent, tampons, and the like, however, which is a shame. . . . Hygiene poverty is rampant in the United States and affects health as well as the capacity of millions of Americans to succeed at school, work, or virtually anyplace.”[1] Source: [1] https://tcf.org/content/commentary/americas-unspoken-hygiene-crisis/?agreed=1

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Healthy Essentials Pantry

Our goal is to provide hygiene products, to meet the undermet and more often unmet need, to alleviate the shame, desperation, and increased risk of illness and disease which often accompanies Hygiene Poverty. Since 2017, our Healthy Essentials Pantry is the only program in Racine, Milwaukee, and Kenosha Counties, WI, addressing the need of moderate and low-income families to obtain hygiene products for their entire household, adults, children, infants, and home. Products such as toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, body wash, baby wipes, baby shampoo/bath, dish soap, disinfecting wipes, multi-purpose cleaner, laundry detergent, toilet paper, and paper towels.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Everyone is aware of the need for food. What about the need to be clean? Feeding America in their research project “found that many American families struggle to afford basic non-food household goods—including products related to personal care, household care and baby care—and, as a result, make trade-offs with other living expenses and employ coping strategies to secure essential household goods.”[1]

According to an article by Tim Barclay, PhD, “Poor hygiene can increase the risk of illness or disease. These are not diseases that you typically catch by chance, but rather are illnesses that come from a lack of personal cleanliness.”[2]

“Federal nutrition assistance programs, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), focus only on food items, so there is a need for other creative strategies to help families afford non-food goods that are just as important for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.”[1] Our Healthy Essentials Pantry is one of those creative strategies.

Currently, other organizations in the counties we serve are food pantries or other organizations with a singular focus such as the diaper ministries. Food pantries are doing an exemplary job serving residents food, their focus, and sporadically basic non-food goods, as are the other organizations with their singular focus. Sadly, “every month thousands of people across Wisconsin turn to 2-1-1 for information and support-whether financial, domestic, health or disaster-related”[3] but within all the categories for assistance no category exists for help with basic non-food goods.

Our aim is to educate funders and social services providers of the need for the provision of basic non-food goods, hoping this knowledge will be the catalyst for funding and resource referrals for these basic essential goods.

We have four (4) strategies to alleviate Hygiene Poverty:
1. Provision of basic non-food goods to moderate and low-income families allowing them to obtain basic non-food goods for their entire household, adults, children, infants, and home on a regular basis.
2. Expand our collaborations with government and nonprofit social services providers as a resource for their clients to obtain these basic essential goods.
3. Continue to be a referral resource for our clients to other available community services. Our objective is to help people meet all their needs.
4. Evaluate our service areas, Racine, Milwaukee and Kenosha Counties, WI, assessing residents served, areas served, and collaborations to ensure we are effectively serving all areas and avoid saturation within residents or areas.

We have been serving our community since 2017; looking at the need, building relationships, supplementing and supporting moderate and low-income individuals and families, the "in poverty" and "working poor".
